Purity Organic Mate with Grapefruit and Ginger

Purity Organic Mate with Grapefruit and Ginger
Purity is a company that I have grown to know and love. Their juices are of high quality without putting a huge dent in your pocket book. I'm currently in San Francisco recording a couple of songs at Tiny Telephone and I took a walk to the Mission for burritos and refreshments and my guys grew huge when I saw this bottle. I'm talking cartoon wolf ogling an attractive woman huge. In my head even the "ha-wooga" sound happened.

When I got back to the studio I cracked this open and my first thought was "Wow this is kind of week." The mate flavor is hardly there and it kind of tastes like a watery grapefruit juice with a touch of ginger in it. I had expected to be blasted with a strong bitter mate flavor and have the other flavors there to round it out. The more I drank it the more I grew to enjoy it though. It is tame, but every drink doesn't need to be in your face. There is nothing wrong with this beverage at all. The grapefruit and ginger tastes are very authentic, because it is made with organic juice. I do wish the mate was stronger. If it were this would get high marks. As it is it leaves a bit to be desired, but it is still very enjoyable. I'm just a boy with high expectations.

Nuwi Quinoa Smoothie Blueberry

Nuwi Quinoa Smoothie Blueberry
A little grit does a body good. Grit lets you know that there are good things going on in there. Natural things. Gritty things. When you describe things as gritty, though, that's not fantastic. I wish there was a different term to use that wouldn't instantly be seen as something undesirable. This is a gritty drink and although it didn't touch the fancy of everyone who tried it, it wasn't that bad. It smelled terribly but it didn't taste too bad. The banana might have had a stronger taste than that of the blueberry and in doing so, it kind of had a "soft" taste to it. This just kind of tasted like a semi-gritty healthy blueberry drink.

Someone who reviewed movies, not drinks, gave this a two. Me, if it was possible to see a three and know that it was a "soft three" then that's what this would be. It earned a three no doubt but it is on the lower side of the threes and not the 3.8 side of the scale. Eeked by, if you will.

Nuwi Quinoa Smoothie Banana

Nuwi Quinoa Smoothie Banana
Number one: Eww. Banana. Number two: this isn't bad. Even with dumb banana hanging around it's not bad. Banana plays the supporting role in this drink while the rest of the heavy lifting is accomplished by quinoa. Normally I think that quinoa smells like urinal cakes so it's nice to see that it's doing something a little differently today.

This is a smoothie but it might not be for the faint of heart. It's slightly, oh so very slightly gritty. If you don't know that it's coming, you might be turned off but if you've ever drank a smoothie before, or if you aren't a gigantic wimp, you will be fine. You're not drinking sand here. It's a proper drink. It's thinner than, say, lassi but thick enough to have some element of substance. I don't feel it lingering around in my gums so it's not sticking. I suppose, if I had to give banana credit: it does taste like banana. Everything is natural in here and you shouldn't worry about anything tasting like it shouldn't. There are no candied bananas in here. All natural, mushed up bananas. Look, bananas suck but if you've got to eat them, drink them instead. This is not bad.

Purity Organic Superjuice Lemon Agave Ginger

Purity Organic Superjuice Lemon Agave Ginger
Two kids in the office didn't ask for the punishment I gave them but oh did they enjoy it. One dude was sitting there and the other just walked in with a drink in his hands. Guess what? I don't give a rip. Everyone will enjoy this and there is nothing you can do about it. You know why? Because I'm older, that's why. I'm their mean older brother who bought them beer but instead of beer it was a spicy lemonade type drink.

We've all got glasses of our drinks and we take our first sips. Ahhhh, we all say. Ahhhh. That there was a sipping drink, one to mull over whilst looking across the water as the sun sets on yet another beautiful day at the cabin. Fish are jumping out of the water. Birds are chirping all around. Bears aren't murdering you but instead sitting beside you on the dock with their bear feat danglin' in the water.

What's so G.D. great about it? It's like lemonade with bits and grits in it. Accompanying that would be a strong, strong ginger taste that is something to call your mama about. Everything is alright. The burn. The lemon.

Love Grace Longevity Tonic

Love Grace Longevity Tonic
Halfway through the last day of my juice cleanse, this is exactly what I needed. It's a nice simple drink, well sort of. This is lemon, shilajit, cayenne, agave and Himalayan sea salt. Basically this is an ever so slightly salty, spicy lemonade. This is a better version of the lemon detox drink (lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper), with shilajit (a concentrated tar form a plant) replacing the maple syrup. My roommate did that detox once years ago and I don't think its benefits outweighed how bad he felt/looked. Being one drink out of 18 though, it's nice. The cayenne gives it a nice burn, similar to the ginger in the other drinks, without being too overpowering.

It's probably the sweetest of all the juices I've had so far, and that's a nice change of pace. I never thought I'd get sick of juice, but I'm just about there. Well, if it was 100% fruit juice I'd probably jump all over it.

Harmless Harvest 100% Raw Tea Raw Peppermint

Harmless Harvest 100% Raw Tea Raw Peppermint
With cold brew coffee being all the rage these days I'm shocked that this is the first I have heard of what is essentially a cold brewed tea. I mean sure I've heard of sun tea, but that's not something I have ever found for sale in a store.

The tea in this bottle has never been heated, nor has it been dehydrated. It is essentially the freshest tea you will ever have in your life unless you or someone you know picks the tea leaves themselves. So what does the world's freshest tea taste like? Well, it's the smoothest of it's kind that I have ever tried, and that is with only 7g of sugar in it. It's no bitterness to it at all. This is a whole new world of tea, that I appreciated more and more with every sip.

So there you have the base for the tea. Added on top of that is some peppermint leaves that are out of this world ridiculous. As soon as you open the bottle the smell hits you and it hits you hard. I can be a bit iffy about mint in my drinks, as it has a tendency to taste like I'm drinking something with gum in my mouth, but that is simply not the case here. This peppermint tastes the way that tea tree oil smells. Yes, that is a good thing for me. The way the leaves are ground up in here, when you take a sip your lips are coated with a crazy mintiness. It feels like you licked a Lifesaver and then rubbed it all over your lips. Intense.

When I first started this bottle I was unsure how I felt about it, but by the time I was done I was already craving more. There is some magic here, and if you see this in your local grocery, do not pass it up.

Q Kola

Q Kola
Mario had finally found his calling in life. For 24 years he was led to believe that cola should taste a certain way, the way of Coca-Cola and Pepsi. Sure they had their subtle differences, but for all purposes they were basically the same. The thing was Mario was okay with it. Sure he preferred Coke over Pepsi, but he had no problem drinking either if they were offered to him. He never really went out of his way to buy cola, because let's face it it's not root beer or ginger beer and those are his loves.

This morning Mario went to his local health food store to buy some vegetarian jerky (now there was a substance he was addicted to). He went to the cooler to grab a drink to wash down his salty, chewy treats, and that is when this little gem caught his eye. To be fair the store needed restocking and it was either this, coconut water or the dreaded kombucha. He made his purchases and headed out to his `88 Dodge Aries. He sat on the hood and tore into his bag of jerky until the saltiness overtook him and he needed to open the soda. Suddenly a whole new world opened up before Mario. Everything he knew about cola was wrong, starting with the fact that it should be spelled kola. He realized that kola was meant to be complex like a fine root beer. It was supposed to taste like waves of herbs and spices such as cinnamon, cloves, coriander and nutmeg. The taste of your everyday cola was meant to only be a base flavor that these spices would enhance. This soda wasn't overly syrupy sweet. In fact this kola is almost slightly bitter. Mario felt like he had been cheated his whole life and that he should have been drinking this his whole life. He knew then that it was his job in life to spread the word of the true kola. He would flyer supermarkets, create guerrilla campaigns where he would sabotage the enemy. He would take the soda world by storm and turn them on their ear…€¦..but first he was going to go back in the store and buy a couple more bottles, because it seriously was really good.

Ujjyana Organic Amazon Guayusa Cherry Ginger

Ujjyana Organic Amazon Guayusa Cherry Ginger
Once again with a drink, I am of two minds. On one hand, this is a great iced tea. It'ss organic, sweetened really well with agave, and has a really nice flavor. And unlike a lot of sweetened iced teas, the sugar (or agave in this case) doesn't overpower it so you can still taste the tea. I must say, it is damn good tea. I don't think I've ever had guayusa tea before, but it's delicious.

So what's wrong with it do you ask? Despite the name, it doesn't taste like cherry or ginger. This is a shame because I was really looking forward to the ginger. I can't pinpoint, but it's still good. This, my friends, is the only reason this is getting a 3 instead of a 4, false advertising.

Q Ginger

Q Ginger
Awhile back Derek and I went to DC to be judges in the Glass Packaging Institute's yearly awards. It was ridiculously fun, and it made us seem like professionals and not the idiotic storytellers that we truly are. A smaller 8oz bottle of Q Ginger was in the running, and I loved the design. It was simple, yet striking. It had an embossed Q in the glass on the bottom of the bottle, and that is amazing. Above all of that I wanted desperately to try it, but we couldn't open the bottles. I had seem regular Q around, but this was the first time I had hear of Q Ginger. Disappointed that I couldn't drink it I continued on with my judging.

I recently found this huge bottle of it at a local health food store. Even though it was slightly expensive, I had to pick it up. I mean I do have a responsibility to the site, don't I?

The bottle touts that the bubbly fluid contained within is "A Superior Ginger Ale." That is quite a claim, but I was up for the taste challenge. Last night I had some friends over and I figured what better time to drink a fancy bottle of ginger ale then during a rousing game of Trivial Pursuit. As soon as I started pouring glasses, a strong ginger scent greeted my nostrils. I couldn't wait until I got back out to the "gaming area" so I tasted it right there away from prying eyes. This is indeed a superior ginger ale. First off it's made with actual ginger extract. That already gives it an edge that most companies don't have. It also gives it a little kick and burn, but not as strong as a heavy ginger beer. It's just enough to let you know that you're drinking the real deal. Now any company can use real ginger. What separates Q from the rest is that they use agave as a sweetener. I love agave, and I wished more companies used it. It makes drinks just sweet enough. A lot of times when you drink things that use it, you forget that they are even sweetened, because you're not in fear of losing your teeth.

The combination of the ginger and agave are what make this one of, if not the, best ginger ales I've ever had. It's very crisp and clean, the way I like my non-brown sodas. It's worth the extra money to purchase a beverage of such a high quality.

Sea2O Organic Energy Drink

Sea2O Organic Energy Drink
This was actually one of the first drinks I reviewed for Thirsty Dudes, but somehow before the site went live the review got deleted. Here is a new review as I bought another can.

This is not carbonated which is weird for two reasons. 1. This is the only energy drink I've had that wasn't. 2. Things that come in skinny cans always seem like they should be.

Basically this is agave juice that has been transformed into an energy drink. It's really sweet, but in a non-offensive way, like a pure fruit juice.

If you're looking for an alternative to all the chemical energy drinks out there, give this a shot.

Numi Puerh Black Tea Earl Gray

Numi Puerh Black Tea Earl Gray
When I was in about 9th grade I can remember a conversation that I had with my home and careers teacher verbatim. First of all, I started with "I'm going through a lot of changes." which was probably the worst thing I could have started with. I thought that she thought that I was going to talk about body hair, or at least something involving my wiener. I followed up that ambiguous statement with "I like to drink tea." I then followed that by saying that I think that I like listening to classical music, which lasted about a month and never, went past one compilation album of "the essentials" of classical music. I probably wouldn't touch the stuff now.

So anyhow, back to teatime. As soon as I started liking tea, I thought it was all the same. I don't even think that I had ventured into the Celestial Seasonings line yet. It was just whatever we had in the house. My best friend growing up's parent were right off the boat from England, Liverpool to be more precise. Being English, they knew their tea and bought me some loose Earl Gray tea. It was alright. Not too strong, pretty basic, but drinkable and very consistent. This Numi tea is the first time I've had Earl Gray of any variety in probably over ten years but it reminds me of way back when. This is sweetened, barely, but nonetheless, sweetened and it's very good. You can taste that it's different than just black tea and has a little something else to it. It's got a sophisticated, worldly taste to it that I cannot stand behind any more.

Americans and Englishmen alike. Please split a bottle of this and together we will have a feast.

Numi Puerh Black Tea Mango Passion

Numi Puerh Black Tea Mango Passion
You know what? This is really good tea. If you don't like sweetened tea, this is a gateway to sweetened tea. If you don't like unsweetened tea, this is a gateway to unsweetened tea. It's right there, in tea purgatory, but a good purgatory. Think of this tea like a waiting room for kids. When you go to the tea doctor, and you have to wait in the waiting room, they've got video games, first edition books in mint condition, your favorite movies in HD with a giant LED TV. We're talking 72 inches of viewing pleasure. Also, a sub tray. I love when I got to parties and they have sub trays. Also, they have an endless bowl of guacamole and chips. Like Chi Chi's salsa but with guacamole instead. They will also have an endless array of Numi teas so that you can train yourself to like either full sweetened or full unsweetened tea. When you are satisfied, you get your parking validated and you can leave.

This is my first go with agave and I've got to say, I like it. It's a very soft, fruity flavor. Everything is subtle, but after a while the fruit get stronger and just makes you smile because it's good. Mango and passion fruit are good friends in this drink and although I'm no teaman, that's a Jewish tea maker, I think they should be combined more often.

Bossa Nova Superfruit Mangosteen With Passionfruit

Bossa Nova Superfruit Mangosteen With Passionfruit
I've had my eye on the Bossa Nova drinks for a while. It's a little on the pricey side, so I showed some restraint. It's made from superfruits so the cost is to be expected. Today was the day of Bossa Nova. We're on the way to a friend's cabin for a wintry excursion, and I wanted a juice for the road. I chose well. This has such a strong passionfruit and guava taste. Those are two of my favorites, so I love it. It has a thickness to it like you come to expect from higher end juices. It also has a nice tanginess along with the sweetness.

This will hopefully give me the energy I need to fight off the serial killers, monsters and aliens that will inevitably attack us tonight. I think Mike and I will be able to take them. We're two strapping young scientists. Even without this drink they wouldn't stand a chance.

Bradford Tonic B-Ginger Ginger & Lime

Bradford Tonic B-Ginger Ginger & Lime
As cheesy as the label is, I really expected this to be intense. I mean it even had a picture of a foot that says "With a kick." That bee sure looks angry, or maybe it's sassy. Unfortunately it tastes like flat watered down ginger beer. I would describe it as if Vitamin Water made a ginger drink, but even more watered down. It does have a decent ginger burn as an aftertaste, but other than that it just tastes blah.
