Flying Bison Mint Cream Soda
We found out that a local brewery, Flying Bison, had started brewing some sodas as well. We stopped in today and the flavor they had was mint cream soda. We ever so excitedly grabbed a growler of it and were on our way. We hadn't even made it into the car before we had cracked it open. Oh man is was good. It smelled way too minty for its own good, but the smell was deceiving. It's a great cream soda. The mint hits you right away, but the aftertaste is mostly cream soda. As an added bonus when you lick your lips, you get to revisit the mint. After a few sips we decided it reminded us a lot of Vanilla Scope mouthwash, but in a completely not gross way. It in no way feels like your drinking mouthwash, but that was our only comparison for a vanilla mint combo. If you're in Buffalo, head over to Flying Bison sometime and pick some of their soda up. I can't wait to head back and try some other flavors.

Barr Irn Bru Original
I can't put my finger on this. It's not bad, but it's not anything I would feel the need to drink again. According to one "source" this is the official drink of Scotland. If so, Scotland, you can do better. This is clearly a soft drink but the flavor is a mix between soda water, orange, and bubble gum. If someone could sum it up better than that, please, do so.

College Club Cherry
This pretty much tastes like someone carbonated the syrup that was left at the bottle of Maraschino Cherries. It reminds me a lot of a Shirley Temple, but without the slight lemon kick. It's ridiculously sweet. Not something I could drink very often, but I would go back to it every once and a while.

Saranac Shirley Temple
Did anyone else's parents drag them to bowling alleys for their league nights? They would drink and bowl the night away, while you would hide out in the arcade area trying to beat Double Dragon? Eventually they would hand you a glass of sugary goodness, that is a Shirley Temple. It's basically Sprite mixed with cherry syrup. It's a child's sweet, sweet dream. Okay I'm going back to playing Road Blaster now.

Goya Malta
Imagine the following. It's Thanksgiving. Everyone has just sat down for a wonderful traditional meal. Suddenly your crazy aunt comes in and pours eight gallons of pureed prunes on everything. That is exactly what Malta Goya tastes like to me. It is the worst beverage I have ever tasted in my life.
Years ago, when I first moved into my current apartment, we had a taco party. Someone thought it would be a good idea to bring a case of this. We all in turn thought it would be a great idea to all chug them at the same time. I then spent the next hour laying on my bathroom floor cringing in pain. I didn't even get another one of these to drink while I wrote this review (which is how I normally do it). It's that bad that I never want the flavor on my tongue again. I wish I could give it a negative rating.
Like this beverage, my sister's boyfriend is from Puerto Rico. I guess people drink it down there like crazy. They can't get enough of it. I can't even come close to understanding that.

HOLY CRAP IT'S SO GOOD!
Aside from it being the darkest creme soda I've ever had, it's probably the best. It hits hard and cold, like a refrigerated pop will, but as soon as the temperature calms down and you can start to taste flavor, it's smooth as can be. Smooth as a baby's butt. Smooth as silk. Smooth as a river rock.
Go buy some. It's fantastic. This will be a return flavor for me.

Orangina Sparkling Citrus
Anyone who has the sense of humor of a junior high student has had a good laugh at how the name of this product could be pronounced. I myself have that sense of humor. How can you not find it funny?
The drink itself is basically a carbonated orange juice with some other slight citrus flavors thrown in the mix. I really enjoy it, and I was shocked to find out that it has HFCS in it when I went to write this review. I never would have guessed it. My only complaint is that the pulp that's in it can be a little hard sometimes. It kind of weirds me out, and it makes me think that it's gone bad.

Stewart's Fountain Classics Birch Beer
So a bunch of my friends are always going on and on about "shower beers." Which is exactly what it sounds like, drinking beers whist taking a shower. They all talked about how great it is, so I decided to have my own version, "shower birch beers." I have to admit, it was pretty awesome. A cool frosty birch beer really complimented a steamy shower.
This is the most mild birch beer I have ever had. It doesn't have the bite that I've come to expect from this beverage. It tastes more like a root beer with one extra ingredient. It's not bad by any means, but I've just had better.

Trader Joe's Vintage Cola
Did cola 40 years ago taste bad? Because if this is vintage cola, I'll stick with the modern recipe. This is made with can sugar, yet has the bite and aftertaste of HFCS. Usually cane sugar cola's taste much better than the normal 99 cents per 2 liter store brand stuff, but this one tastes just like them, if not worse. This is my 2nd bottle of Trader Joe's "vintage" sodas. The only one I haven't tried yet is Orange Cream, and I don't know if I want to see how bad they messed up one of the best soda flavors. I'm going to try it though for the sake of Thirsty Dudes, so check back soon to see how that goes

Sierra Mist Diet Cranberry Splash
Is this our first diet drink? I think it might be. My review? Tastes like a diet drink. Aspartame has the "too sweet" bite aftertaste to it. I typically don't drink things like this, but with any new drink, it has to be reviews. Sorry friend, but you too have to enter the gauntlet.
Sweeteners aside, it give you a good initial kick of flavor. Even though it is still, at its core, lemon and lime, you really get a cranberry taste.
Far from my least favorite diet pop, but I honestly don't have a favorite so you can take that however you would like. It tastes a lot less like poison than a lot of the other diet's I've tried in the past.

Cold Spring Root Beer
I saw this root beer in the store for $3.50 for a sixer. I figured for cane sugar root beer, how could I pass it up? On the way home I cracked one open, and was fairly disappointed. It tasted more like root beer barrel candy than actual root beer. The rest has been sitting in my fridge since. Today I brought one to work. Having it cold made such a difference. It became creamy and smooth, almost like cream soda minus the vanilla. I will enjoy the rest of the bottles I have, but I doubt I would purchase it again. There are just too many other better root beers out there.

What a crisp drink. I've been finding that there are some great drinks at holes in the wall. This one, like the others, was found at Black Rock Beverages. It's such a throwback. I love it. The small, reused bottles with pry-off caps are so retro, but for them, it's the way it's always been.
This was a nice, fast, sweet drink. It's close to 7-up and Sprite, but different. My friend Matt I let try it says that he likes it and doesn't like 7-up and Sprite is impressive. Like I said, it's got a sweetness and a definite citrus flavor, but nothing you can put your finger on. According to the bottle cap, it's got citrate and lemon lime extract so there you go.
If you want something different but somewhat familiar, get this. Seriously, it's $0.30. Get two. Your girlfriend is in the car waiting for you.

Virgil's Cream Soda
Virgil's has been one of my favorite soda companies for quite some time. I don't know if it's because it's micro brewed, or the quality of the ingredients they use, but it's worthy of the "Outstanding Beverage Award" they have won several times from the National Association of the Specialty Food. This specifically is the smoothest cream soda I've ever tried. It actually tastes like real vanilla and not vanilla flavored candies. Why do so many companies think their sodas should taste like the candy of that flavor, and not the actual flavor? I really need to try other micro brewed sodas.

Gus (Grown Up Soda) Dry Cola
Remember when you were a kid or a stupid adult and you used to put your mouth over a fresh two-liter bottle of pop and just inhale? That was stupid, but do you remember the taste? It was like a dry cola air. Like a cola flavored, breath subtracting air. This "dry cola" tastes like that and nothing else. Nothing. I don't know who is complaining about too much cola taste but I do understand the too much sugar, which this drink takes care of.
If you are 84 and hate a rich cola taste and an adequate amount of sugar, this is for you.

Trader Joe's Vintage Root Beer
I don't know why I expected more of this root beer since it's a store brand. There's nothing wrong with it, but it's definitely mediocre as far as root beer goes. It's better than A&W since it's sweetened with cane sugar, but it's far from being as good as Virgil's or other top tier root beer's. It's drinkable, but I wouldn't go out of my way to get a bottle.

Reed's China Cola
This is a soda I try at least once a year because I keep hoping I'll like it more than I do. It's not a bad cola. In fact it lacks the bite that most cola's have which is nice. The aftertaste is what I'm not crazy about. The bottle says it has herbs and spices in it, and that is what is probably contributing the interesting aftertaste. It sort of reminds me of that holiday Pepsi Spice that was available a few years ago that had a nutmeg aftertaste. Although, I loved Pepsi Spice and I'm not a huge fan of China Cola.

Boylan's Cane Cola
This cola isn't really different than any other cola. Does that make it good? Possibly. I guess if you have a good thing, stick with it. For a company that has been around for over 100 years, I would say Boylans is a staple in the cola game. I might be disappointed if it did taste strange or different unless that's what they were known for.
"Strange tastes for over 100 years"
Who wants that tag line? How about something like:
"The taste you know and love, unchanged for over 100 years."
Probably better, right? This makes it hard to rate because although it's nothing different or special, it is the gold standard of cola tastes. I would go as far as saying that due to the age of this company, this would be the model of cola. Does that make it a 5? It certainly doesn't make it a 1. Is a 3 too harsh? I don't think they want me to expect anything more since it's such a classic.
I'm rating it a 4 because I give them full credit for keeping with what they believe in with the cane sugar and making a high quality cola. Glass bottles and a pry-off cap also a +1, even if I rarely have a bottle opener on me. It's classic. You could share this with your dad and grandpappy and they would say the same thing. That speaks to me, the consistency.

This is a delicious, inexpensive, historic treat. Firstly, remember when we were kids and we used to drink out of reused bottles? No, not recycled, reused.
This pop is in those bottles and, in my opinion, flavored with real sugar.
It's a quick, sweet cola taste that is short lasting and is a bit reminiscent of Coke.
Love it, buy it, and bring the bottle back.

Dr. Pepper Throwback
I like Dr. Pepper. It's one of the only "standard" pops that I drink. I like the flavor.
For that reason, I liked this throwback version. It didn't have any real different taste, perhaps just a little bit sweeter. It seemed to have a different bite to it. It no longer had the thickness and lastingness of corn syrup and had a more instant and quick taste.
Please, just keep using real sugar and retire your old ways.

College Club Lime
We were tipped off that the Black Rock Beverage Center in Buffalo had bottles of strange pop for $.30 each. We went to check it out and it was a goldmine. They had about 15 different flavors of "The Pop Shoppe." We bought an assorted case and headed home to try them out. We soon found out that The Pop Shoppe was an old company from Canada that went out of business, and that many bottlers reused their old bottles. A couple of the bottles say Monroe Beverage Co on the sides of the caps, so we're assuming that is the name of the company, even though we can't find much info about them, other than they are from Rochester, NY.
Okay enough back-story.
This is a tasty little bottle of pop. They made a lime flavored beverage that actually does not taste like cleaning fluid. Not only that but it tastes like melted green freezie pops. It says it's made with corn sweetener. It doesn't seem very thick, so I'm not sure if that's the same as HFCS. It's pretty great, and a steal for $.30.
