Skeleteens Love Potion No. 69 Purple
Back in the mid 90's when I was in high school, New Age Creations and Showplace Theatre (a local music venue) used to sell the Skeleteens line of soda. I was obsessed with it. It was overly caffeinated, and I remember some of them felt like you were drinking liquid smoke. After a few months they disappeared from the shelves. There were a bunch of rumors floating around as to why, most of them being about how there was actually some sort of illegal drug in the ingredients, or that one of the ingredients had been banned. This was about a decade before energy drinks really hit the market hard, so things heavily caffeinated seemed insane. Remember how people went nuts about Jolt back in the day?
I quickly forgot the company even existed. About two years ago I started searching for info, but no one knew what I was talking about. Even my friends who used to get them with me, barely remembered them existing. It didn't help that I couldn't remember the name of the company. Finally someone remembered they were called Skeleteens, and I scoured the internet. I found out that although the Skeleteens company is no more, Real Soda has taken over and on occasions small runs of the drinks were made, unfortunately I could only find them at distributors in California, and shipping was astronomical. I searched for them everywhere I went, with no luck. Then for Xmas this year, my girlfriend's parents ordered me a bunch of sodas from Galcos. I got one of each Skeleteens flavor, and boy am I ever stoked.
Okay forget the back-story, on to the review. As soon as I popped this open the smell hit me, and I totally felt like I was 15 again. It's crazily carbonated, but this one unfortunately didn't have as strong of a liquid smoke feeling as I remember (I now liken that feeling to crazy strong ginger beer). It starts off as a grape flavor, but then it switches directions and heads somewhere out west. I have no idea what to compare the flavor to, but I really love it. Maybe it's all the crazy herbs that are in the drink. Here is a list: Siberian Ginseng, Jasmine, Buchu, Dillweed, Ginko Biloba, Clove, Echinacea, Damiana, Kola Nut, Dong Quai, Brazilian Guarna, Gotu Kola, African Capsicum and Chamomile (I don't get why this one was in here). It's a weird mix of energy releasing and sexual stimulation herbs and those to promote a healthy immune system. Shear insanity. I've only gotten halfway through the bottle, and I already real insanely caffeinated. I have yet to have any sexual stimulation, so I'm calling their bluff.
Oh, and the label does nothing but scream 90's counter-culture. It's such an "alternative" company. Here are some of the things printed on the label: "arousing carbonated drink", "True love ain't cheap", "It's a turn on", "Helps to keep your heart on", "Nine inches full of wetness", "Not to be used alone unless you're into self-satisfaction" and my personal favorite (right above the ingredients) "What you'll be swallowing is these."
I don't know if it's just nostalgia or what, but I'm giving this a five-bottle review. I really love the way it tastes. I was hoping that I would think it was disgusting now that I'm older, so that I wouldn't have to worry about finding it again. Oh well. Now I'm going to have to find the pink variety of this. If anyone has any hook ups of how I can get this without it costing me a million dollars in shipping, please, please, please let me know.

Limca Lime
On voyage to the Indian market I came across this lil' dude. I must have missed it last time. It's called Limca and, you guessed it, it tastes like lime pop. It's pretty self explanatory, but in a good way. It's made from Coca-Cola as a subsidiary, but between the retro glass bottle and the vintage screen-printed label, you would never guess. You would think that you just stumbled upon some old bottle of pop from the 70's.
Taste? It's more like a candied real lime. It's not like a candy lime flavor. Get it? It tastes more like a real lime than some chemically manufactured lime flavor syrup. I don't know what it's actually made with, but I give it all the credit for not being neon green like most lime related products.
Also, for those health nuts out there, this has half the calories as a can of pop. I read it twice to ensure that I was getting my information correct.
I liked it and if anyone likes the taste of lime water, they might want to try this. It leaves a lime water aftertaste that keeps you wanting more.

Root Jack Orange Flavored Root Beer
I sent a question in to the Root Jack website and they answered it in a video on their site and sent me two bottles to sample. Pirate root beer is an idea I can get behind. To make things better it is orange flavored and has vitamin c in it to fight scurvy.
It has an initial root beer flavor, but where the bite would be an orange flavor smoothes it out. I hope people don't take this the wrong way but it kind of reminds me of the "Burger King/Laser Tron Special". You know where you mix everything in the fountain machine together.
To put the top on it, it's jam packed with guarana to give you an extra kick of energy. This is definitely a unique root beer.

Sippin Syrup Purple
You know how you sometimes buy a two-liter of soda pop and it sits in your fridge too long, because you're not a glutton who needs that much cruddy soda in your life? It's been in there so long that it has lost a lot of its carbonation and it's on the verge of becoming flat. It has just the most minuscule amount of fizz. Okay remember how that feels in your mouth. Now think about a grape little Huggie. You know the drinks for kids that come in those tiny translucent plastic bottles. Now think of a melted grape freezie pop. Now in your mind mix all three and don't forget to shake vigorously to get rid of a little more of that carbonation. Now you have Sippin Syrup.
I didn't experience any relaxation from this at all. I was a bit tired before I drank it, and if anything it woke me up a little bit more. It has the same stuff in it as other relaxation drinks I've had. It must just not be in as high quantities.

Mapco Tallboys Sweet Tea
Jay picked up this "gem" while he was in whatever town/city/borough he was in and carefully brought it home. I might give him a friendly punch in the arm because it wasn't too great. There's sweet tea and there's "sweet tea". This is the latter. It's sweet and it's tea but it's mostly creamy, high fructose garbage.
There is no bite or real tea flavor at all. Arizona lemon iced tea with more sugar is closer to tea than this.
Lesson?
Some gas station teas are diamonds in the rough. This isn't. This is the epitome of "the rough".

Sioux City Berry Berry
I had never seen this flavor of Sioux City before. I can understand why it's a less common variety. The blue color makes it look like a bottle of windshield wiper fluid. Also, berry/fruity sodas (with the exception of orange, grape and grapefruit) for the most part aren't very good. Sioux City in their tradition of greatness has broken through with one that is actually pretty good. It's a hodgepodge of berries, with a general sweetness to it. Don't let the fact that it looks like an automobile fluid dissuade you from trying it if you ever see it.

Mountain Dew White Out
I love video games. I really do. Do I wish that I could do all night LAN parties and Xbox Live until the break of dawn? You betcha. Do I make a big deal and schedule events when new games come out so that my dude friends can rage in my living room? Ab-so-lutely. Let me also say that I am a web developer. Have you ever gone into a web developer's office/basement "office"/bedroom? There are typically mountains, walls, and barriers made of Mountain Dew cans and bottles. I've seen it with my own eyes.
I don't really like it. It's just got a bit of a toxic taste to it that I can't place. It just tastes artificial. There is no distinguishable flavor. It's just whatever Mountain Dew tastes like. I recently bought a sub/hoagie/grinder from across the street and when you do that, you can get a free can of pop. I saw it there and decided what better time than now? So here I am, in my office, doing "The Dew" and I have to tell you, it's not bad. You still get traditional Mountain Dew flavor as an aftertaste but there is a definite "citrus" flavor on top and it's not bad. Sure it's mega sweet but it's to be expected.
If you want to try it, try it. You can get it by the can or bottle so you don't have to commit to a case or 2 liter bottle, which might be dental suicide. You might be surprised and like it.

Jeff's Chocolate Soda
I saw this on the shelf in a random grocery store and I needed to have it. Then I got home and saw that it fairly largely proclaimed to have "Egg Cream." The thought made me want to hurl. Imagine a nice root beer and then someone dumps a bunch of whipped egg in it. That probably sounds like the worst thing ever.
After putting it off for a few days, I decided this was the night. There were a bunch of people hanging out and I could pass it around, so I wouldn't feel like I had to drink the whole thing.
You know what? It's not that bad. It tastes like someone took a sweet flavorless soda and dumped a packet of Swiss Miss hot chocolate mix in it. It has the consistency of chocolate milk, with a nice thick head on it. It's a bit weird, but the more you drink of it, the better it is. It's really only the aftertaste that is weird.
I also just realized it kind of tastes like when I was a kid and I thought I was awesome, so before school I would mix all of the beverages in my fridge and drink it at the bus stop. On the days that there was chocolate milk, and no orange juice, it really wasn't all that bad. It's like the Burger King self serve special. We've all done that.

Cawy Red Cola Fruiti Cola
The Cawy sodas have been pretty hit or miss. This one is closer to the center of the board than most, but it doesn't quite hit the bulls-eye.
Fruiti Cola is similar to a cherry cola, but instead of cherry being the added flavor it's more of a fruit punch. It has an aftertaste that, as a friend pointed out, is very reminiscent of cotton candy.
I like the flavor of this, but it's a bit too sweet for me to finish an entire can. I can see this being a favorite for little kids.
I also think this may be what Neil Diamond was singing about in "Porcupine Pie." "Tutti fruit, and fruiti blue cheese." Really what was that man thinking?

Chadwick Bay Lemonade Original
I wouldn't exactly say, "just how mama made it" as mom probably used real sugar and not a corn based sugar substitute, but the taste is pretty spot on. It's got a good tartness and a good sweetness to it and neither lingers too long in your mouth like an unwanted guest and we all know what that's like.
I saved the other half for just the right occasion, and that might be coming up soon as I am pretty thirsty. You get that way occasionally.

Cawy Rica Orange Mandarin
Hmm...I can't place it. It's orange pop. Let it be known. I don't know why, but I appreciate, there are two different oranges in this drink. Why not put a tangerine in there? Round it out. Burps taste like oranges and they are long lasting. Honestly, the burps might be better than the drink. Is that bad? If you only enjoy one aspect of a drink does that make it a good drink? It might. It is not a bad flavor and if anyone adores orange pop, give this a whirl.
In Buffalo, it's unacceptable, but I know you can get it anywhere elsewhere, like Target, for example of ease of access.

Arizona Arnold Palmer Lite Green Tea Lemonade
As Jay mentioned earlier in his Arizona Yumberry review, we used to drink Arizona all the darn time. Like every day, all the time, for years. Once we started not actively drinking things with HFCS in them, we just stopped, cold turkey.
This is light, and has a bit of that Splenda bite, as that is what is used to make it "lite" but you know what? It's not terrible. I think that the lemon zing masks the artificial sweetener taste so it's acceptable to everyone's palate.
This is a good diet alternative. Sweet Leaf has a non-diet, no muss, no fuss, Half and Half that you should try if you're not looking for a diet drink with artificial sweeteners, but this drink isn't bad at all. Tell your fat uncle Harry to try this instead of constantly drinking delicious, triple thick, chocolate milkshakes.

Arizona Arnold Palmer Southern Sweet Tea and Pink Lemonade
A nice twist to the ever growing populate of Arnold Palmers out there, and an even nicer change to the ever-growing Half & Half population. Right from the get-go, you get a mouthful of pink lemonade. I don't know the scientific/non-scientific explanation of the difference between regular and pink lemonade, but this is different. As my friend Mike said, "It just tastes pink." It does. He's right.
When I drank it, I got a lot of lemonade and was wondering where the iced tea was. You get it at the very end and as an aftertaste. It's pretty sweet, but the Arizona Sweet Tea is terribly sweet and it's probably the same stuff.
The mix is good. I don't know why they don't sell this everywhere, because it's different and it's a name that is trusted.

Drank Extreme Relaxation Beverage
The original Drank was a southern hip hop "beverage." It was normally Sprite with a bottle of codeine cough syrup dumped in it. Sometimes Jolly Ranchers were thrown in for good measure.
Now this is a mass produced "safe" version. It's pretty much a very light grape pop with rose hips, melatonin and Valerian Root thrown in.
I expected this to be very thick on syrupy, as I image the original version was. It really just tastes like a tame grape soda.
It definitely relaxes you and makes you sleepy. As the can says "slow your roll."

Goya Refresco Sangria
Not being a drinker, I don't know what authentic sangria tastes like. I've seen it before and I asked my girlfriend what it tastes like. She said it's just red wine and fruit.
I think this drink was very grape and not much else. I expected fruit and I would have been fine with indefinable fruit flavor, but this just tasted like a weak grape pop. If it was just grape, that would be better than most grape pops I've had in the past because it's typically way too sweet for my tastes.
Was it too much to ask for; a couple apples, grapes, orange, and whatever else you might put in authentic sangria? I might like a tea with that instead of a carbonated drink. Any suggestions?

Sangaria Ramune Original
When I lived in Boston for the summer of 2000, I found a little Asian market. This was my first experience with international markets and it was wonderful. There is a whole other world of candies, snacks, meat, and most importantly fun drinks. As soon as I got back home, I bought a case of the stuff because I didn't know that you could get it around me.
I had a friend from the Far East named Miki who guided me through the wonderful drink, Ramune.
Oh, you've never had it? It's essentially the most fun bottled drink in existence. Better than cork, bottle cap, or even swing top. The beverage is sealed with a marble and it come with a little plastic popper that you slam over the top and it drops the marble into the drink. Then, there are two little indentions that hold the marble while you take sips than ensure that you don't plug up the hole.
The drink is great too. It's a citrus soda, but it's pretty indescribable when it comes to flavor. It's kind of like a Sprite/7-Up but not really. It's good, though.
If you have never had Ramune before, please get it. I can get it at my local supermarket in the "Asian" section so it might be easier to find than you think.

Aunt Rosie's Loganberry
If you aren't from Western New York, you have probably never heard of this. Yes, loganberry is a real fruit. I don't know why it isn't used more, and why I've never seen one outside of this can. There is another company called "Crystal Beach" which also makes a loganberry drink that's pretty parallel with Aunt Rosie's. To describe the taste...syrup-y. It's a classic HFCS drink. It might taste "wrong" if it were made with something else. One of those "Don't fix what's not broken" or "Don't ruin a good thing" scenario. It's fruity and candy-like. To define the flavor, though? It's hard. It's clearly a "berry" taste, but I can't compare it to anything. Blackberry-esque. That might be the closest that I can compare it to.

HKK Aloe & Yogo Peach
Just look at the color of this stuff. It looks like the milk left over in your bowl after eating some Franken Berry cereal. It's crazy.
It's a mixture of aloe and yogurt, so I expected it to be really thick, but it's not much thicker than your average aloe drink. It also doesn't taste nearly as sweet as the coloring would denote.
I know this sounds stupid but it's like a milk bubble tea. Except the tapioca balls are switched out for aloe chucks and the tea is switched out for aloe juice.
I wouldn't drink this on the regular, but I would like to try other flavors of it.

I wouldn't drink this on the regular, but I would like to try other flavors of it.

Powerade ION4 Sour Melon
When I was in high school, I drank Powerade almost every day because it was the only thing besides water in the vending machines before 1pm. I know a lot of people hate the taste, but I don't mind it at all.
Nowadays, I only drink Powerade (or Gatorade) when I'm sick. I made an exception today because I am a big fan of sour drinks so I had to try this. While it does have a slight sour flavor, it's definitely not as strong as I hoped it would be. When I drink/eat something sour I want my lips to pucker. Sadly this didn't happen.
Also, this really doesn't taste like melon. It might be the color that's throwing my taste buds off, but it tastes more like green apple to me. Overall it's a decent drink, and probably the best Powerade flavor I've ever had. It's super refreshing and makes me feel like I should be playing kickball at the park with a bunch of my friends.

Goya Jamaican Style Ginger Beer
When we recently reviewed some ginger drinks and complained that the burn wasn't as strong as we wanted, people told us we needed to check this out. Holy crap were they right. This has the strongest burn I've experienced in a long time. It feels like my throat and stomach are filled with red-hot embers. You know what? It's great. It's definitely a sipping soda. The more you drink the tamer the burn, but don't wait too long between sips or you'll get a fresh kick in the butt. It has capsicum in it, which is a hot pepper. That is definitely in cahoots with the ginger. I love it. It just hurts in all the right ways.
