Cawy Coconut
Mixed reviews galore. I'll give you all of them:
Darryl:
Coconut instantly hits my throat and I instantly think Banana Boat suntan lotion.
Mike:
Tastes like suntan lotion
Mark:
[silence]
Me:
It wasn't bad. I mean, it's coconut, for real. If you like coconut, you should like this drink. If you don't, I would basically say that you should get a restraining order against it. It captures a real coconut pretty accurately. You get the sweet taste including the nutty aftertaste. It might sound gross, and it is, but I wish that there was chocolate syrup here so that I could mix it in and make an Almond Joy pop. I wonder if we have any...

Vignette Wine Country Soda Chardonnay
I was skeptical about the Vignette series of sodas, mainly because actual wine smells like death to me. It smells so bad that I can't even comprehend how bad it must taste. Most people seem to love wine, but you know what I'm not most people and I don't trust others tastes.
I cracked this open and the smell was not offensive at all. I took a little sip, and what do we have here? This is really good. I'd even say great. If my memory from 20 years ago is correct, this tastes a lot like Mystic drinks when they used to be carbonated. I'm probably totally off on that, but that's what comes to mind.
It's like the lightest white grape juice, carbonated. There's something else in there as well. I can't quite place what it is, but it's just incredible. I salute you Vignette you have created something that I will now crave, but not be able to get around my hometown.

A&W Root Beer
I really like that a lot of companies are starting to bring back glass bottles for their pop. I hope it's not a limited time sort of thing. Pop tastes better in glass than in cans or plastic. It's a scientific fact. The fine folks at NASA proved it back in the 70's. I think it was even mentioned in the Watergate files.
This tastes like a better version of the A&W you're used to. It's not as syrupy and it doesn't taste too cheap. I don't think I would ever buy a "normal" A&W if I saw it in a store, but it would be likely for me to pick another one of these up.

Cawy Rica Orange Mandarin
Hmm...I can't place it. It's orange pop. Let it be known. I don't know why, but I appreciate, there are two different oranges in this drink. Why not put a tangerine in there? Round it out. Burps taste like oranges and they are long lasting. Honestly, the burps might be better than the drink. Is that bad? If you only enjoy one aspect of a drink does that make it a good drink? It might. It is not a bad flavor and if anyone adores orange pop, give this a whirl.
In Buffalo, it's unacceptable, but I know you can get it anywhere elsewhere, like Target, for example of ease of access.

Romano's Italian Soda Raspberry
I really want to get one of those machines that let you carbonate anything. How great would that be? I would carbonate the dumbest stuff, just because I could. Carbonated chocolate milk? Sure it would be gross, but I'd still do it.
This tastes like it was home carbonated, and I mean that in a good way. I know it's just some sort of syrup in carbonated water, but it's great. I feel like I'm drinking it in a little cafe somewhere in Italy.
Now bring on the carbonated soup.

Chubby Cream Soda
Absolutely gross. It smells like cream soda but tastes like cream soda soap. Gross. I shared half the 8.5 bottle and dumped the rest. Another waste of thirty-three cents. Can't wait for the finale....pineapple.

Drank Extreme Relaxation Beverage
The original Drank was a southern hip hop "beverage." It was normally Sprite with a bottle of codeine cough syrup dumped in it. Sometimes Jolly Ranchers were thrown in for good measure.
Now this is a mass produced "safe" version. It's pretty much a very light grape pop with rose hips, melatonin and Valerian Root thrown in.
I expected this to be very thick on syrupy, as I image the original version was. It really just tastes like a tame grape soda.
It definitely relaxes you and makes you sleepy. As the can says "slow your roll."

Jarritos Mandarin
I used to be able to find these around Buffalo, but I haven't seen them for quite some time. I just grabbed one at a store in Richmond. Great story, isn't it?
It's a nice orange pop. You can definitely taste mandarin as being the specific type of orange used.
This also came in a special bicentennial package. A company that has stayed in business for 200 years has obviously been doing something right.

Wegmans Frizzante Cranberry Lime
Do you know what's good? This drink is. I don't know why more things on flavored with cranberry and lime because this was simply amazing. The blood orange was better, if we're picking favorites, but this was very good. Also I enjoyed it came in the smaller bottles in I didn't have to buy a 40 ounce drink that's going to go flat after I open it.
If you are ever in the neighborhood please pick up a bottle of this and you will not be disappointed. Plus a case of four bottles is $5 and that rules.

Goya Refresco Sangria
Not being a drinker, I don't know what authentic sangria tastes like. I've seen it before and I asked my girlfriend what it tastes like. She said it's just red wine and fruit.
I think this drink was very grape and not much else. I expected fruit and I would have been fine with indefinable fruit flavor, but this just tasted like a weak grape pop. If it was just grape, that would be better than most grape pops I've had in the past because it's typically way too sweet for my tastes.
Was it too much to ask for; a couple apples, grapes, orange, and whatever else you might put in authentic sangria? I might like a tea with that instead of a carbonated drink. Any suggestions?

Steaz Sparkling Green Tea Raspberry
I'm pretty sure there is a basic human need to drink carbonation at times. I've gone through periods where I give up soda all together for awhile. I never actually last very long, because I get this weird feeling in my throat after a week or two and the only way to make that feeling go away is to drink something that has bubbles in it. This inevitably ends up with me drinking some sort of pop a few hours after the feeling's arrival. Sure I could just drink some soda water to “scratch” my throat, but there is something about it that I just can't stomach. Who knew carbon dioxide had a flavor?
I bring all of this up because in the past I always used to wonder why someone didn't carbonate iced tea. I love iced tea; some would say that I was a junkie for it. The idea of being able to get rid of that throat itch with some tea was always the dream. Then some companies finally came out with carbonated tea, and it just turned out all wrong. I don't know exactly what was wrong, but something was missing. I've even had some other Steaz sparkling teas and they didn't live up to my expectations. They are finally onto something with this raspberry one though. It's not 100% there, but it's leagues beyond the other ones I've had. It actually tastes like someone just added bubbles to some raspberry iced tea. I think the thing that seems off about it is that it is green and not black tea. I think this would be close to perfect if it were black tea, but I have very few complaints about its green brother. My only real complaint is it doesn't have that classic bitter green tea aftertaste. The sugar covers it up, which makes me question why they didn't go with black tea, since that aftertaste is what I love about green tea.
To sum things up: Throats get itches that need to be scratched by carbonation. Iced tea is awesome. Carbonated iced tea when done right is also awesome. Scratch your throat with some of this tea from time to time. You deserve it.

Sangaria Ramune Original
When I lived in Boston for the summer of 2000, I found a little Asian market. This was my first experience with international markets and it was wonderful. There is a whole other world of candies, snacks, meat, and most importantly fun drinks. As soon as I got back home, I bought a case of the stuff because I didn't know that you could get it around me.
I had a friend from the Far East named Miki who guided me through the wonderful drink, Ramune.
Oh, you've never had it? It's essentially the most fun bottled drink in existence. Better than cork, bottle cap, or even swing top. The beverage is sealed with a marble and it come with a little plastic popper that you slam over the top and it drops the marble into the drink. Then, there are two little indentions that hold the marble while you take sips than ensure that you don't plug up the hole.
The drink is great too. It's a citrus soda, but it's pretty indescribable when it comes to flavor. It's kind of like a Sprite/7-Up but not really. It's good, though.
If you have never had Ramune before, please get it. I can get it at my local supermarket in the "Asian" section so it might be easier to find than you think.

JCS Reggae Style Ginger Beer
It's almost 3am and I'm in Gainesville, FL. What else would I be doing that drinking this brutal ginger beer? It's got one heck of a burn, and it's nice and sweet. I kind of feel like I just chugged a gallon of liquid smoke. It's probably not a great idea to drink this before bed.

Izze Sparkling Birch
This is really weird. First off, it makes my tongue numb for some reason. I feel like someone smeared Orajel on the mouth of the bottle. I really don't understand that at all.
It tastes like a very light birch beer. Like the ratio of carbonated water to flavor is really high. It tastes almost herbal tea like.
Really though, someone explain to me the numbing.

D'Angelo DUH! Pomegranate Cream Soda
Woah. Strange. It's more of a sparkling or carbonated water than a pop if I was to caste this drink out. It might be the whopping 5% real fruit juice, but it's a good touch. This stuff is pretty good. It's really sweet, but slamming my taste buds with flavor. It's a lot of pomegranate flavor and not a lot of cream soda flavor. The cream soda flavor rounds out the sweet, bitterness of the pomegranate and leaves a certain smoothness that I can't really describe. This whole drink is taking me for a loop and leaving me quite speechless.
Jay got this for me whilst seeing one Paul F. Tompkins in Toronto. He bought a lot of stuff and brought even more home. A lot of this month's strange oddities have been from said trip. D'Angelo seems to have a pretty large line of drinks so we might have our hands full as if they are this good, we might have to work out some sort of international trade agreement.

Virgil's Special Edition Bavarian Nutmeg Rootbeer
I wish there was am option to give this 6 bottles, or maybe one giant golden bottle. This is more than likely the best root beer I've ever had. Well worth the $5 I paid for it.
This is a sipping beverage for sure. It's so damn smooth. It has a strong nutmeg/anise aftertaste. This is what a root beer should be. It's sweet, but not candy like. There are so many spices contributing to this magnificent glory.

Romano's Italian Soda Orange Cream
Go back in time to when you were in second grade. Don't think of the future. After all, you're 7. What do you care about the economy, career, marriage, responsibility, or basically anything? There is one thing you care about...
It's time for lunch. You and your class walk down to the lunchroom and wait in line. You get a boiled hot dog, chocolate milk, apple and one more thing. You go over to the ice cream freezer and get an orange creamsicle. You eat everything on your plate and then you silence the world around you as you eat that creamsicle.
Do I need to say that Romano's Orange Creme tastes just like that? I hope that I don't.

Cawy Materva Diet Yerba Mate Soda
Time for another installment to our diet section of the ever-growing list of drinks. See, dieteers? We care. We really do. So lose that weight and don't look back.
Initially, this smells like an energy drink. While awaiting the million Smarties flavor to invade my taste buds, I was happy/surprised to not get it. There is bitterness to this that perhaps in the non-diet version might be a little less bitter, but it's actually not bad. With the aspartame, I got a bit of the tongue pinching that you get with artificial sweeteners, but you get a strong tea and light, dry cola taste. It's not bad and it's definitely different. If you have the chance, get it and give it a taste. Expect it to be bitter, because the yerba mate is, after all, a tea.
Now, as you can see (hopefully) that I took a picture of my friend John drinking this. He wanted to put in a little review so here is his contribution to Thirsty Dudes:

While it resembles some foul-tasting energy drinks I've had, the resemblance is similar to the resemblance between a hot sister and an ugly sister. We've all seen them... you know they're sisters, they look somewhat alike, and they act a lot alike, yet one is hot and the other is butt-ugly.

Cawy Pineapple
Wow. Candied pineapples. It's so sweet and there is no way that I could drink a whole can of this. Kids could, self-respecting adults could not. Burps taste like pineapple candy, too. I'm trying to cover all aspects of this drink for you. You put the can to your face and you begin to smell what's to come when you tip that can over a bit. It's pretty good and next time I'm anywhere where Cawy drinks are sold and I want a pineapple pop and have 11 friends around me to share the can with, I'll buy it.
Also, designers, seriously, look at the can. It's so classic and vintage. You've got to see the rest of the stuff they sell. Many in the same vein and nothing looks like it's past the early 80's.

Vimto Fizzy
Some friends of mine brought me this bottle over from the U.K. I had seen it when I was over there, but never tried it. As per usual, I messed up. It's pretty awesome. It's a grape/raspberry soda that has actual fruit juice in it. It's like a thick berry juice that's been carbonated. It also has Vimto flavoring in it, which includes herbs, barley malt and spices. Weird. There is apparently also a non-carbonated version of it. Kids would really love this, as do I, because I'm a child.
