Blackman Homestead Farm Issac's Apple Concord Grape Juice

Blackman Homestead Farm Issac's Apple Concord Grape Juice
It's a wonderful thing when you find local drinks that you didn't know exist. I especially love when I find local juices. My ladyfriend picked this up for me at a farmers market and it's incredible. It is made in Lockport, NY and the only ingredients are local grapes and apples, both of which grow in abundance around here. No sugar, no preservatives, just fresh fruit. I love it. It's possibly the best grape juice I have ever had. The apple sweetens it up a bit so it's not very tart, but the strong flavor of the concord grapes greets your tongue with every sip.

If you're ever in the area and you come across this, I can't urge you enough to pick up a bottle. According to their website Blackman also makes a cider in the autumn that I can't wait to try.

Cintron Raspberry Iced Tea

Cintron Raspberry Iced Tea
I don't mean this to come across racist in any way, but I really feel like whoever designed this can did so with the Hispanic market in mind, specifically teenagers and young adults. I'm not saying that everyone who is from that ethnicity is into this sort of design, but that is what television would like me to believe. Stupid racist television. Because of it this can fills my head with visions of low-riders and bandanas.

In a blind taste test I don't know if I could tell this and Arizona's raspberry tea apart. Both are sweet and syrupy with that not quite natural raspberry flavor. It's not terrible, but with the current selection of iced teas that are on the market this certainly doesn't stand out.

Maine Root Lemonade Ginger-Lemongrass

Maine Root Lemonade Ginger-Lemongrass
I remembered something very important yesterday: I am not a beach person. My somewhat recent vacation to Hawaii had me confused. There I enjoyed the beach, but that was because there were cliffs to jump off of, ropes to swing from, and clear water full of weird sea creatures to see when snorkeling. The beach in Buffalo has none of these things. It has a terrain that is more rocks than sand, and what little sand there is is blowing around in the wind. I went with some friends, and then tried to suck it up as to not bum anyone out. I don't know how good of a job I did, but I can say I tried. To overcome my boredom/trying to escape the suns ever burning rays I hid under an umbrella and drank some lemonade.

Lemonade is the official drink of the summer for me. I can't remember a past summer when I didn't drink obscene amounts of the stuff. When I saw this at Wegmans I was pretty pumped. Maine Root has treated me well in the past with their sodas and now they are throwing ginger lemonade my way. I help off a bit before drinking it because I was expecting the ginger to be super harsh. When I finally drank it I discovered I was mistaken and it's actually pretty tame. This tastes like pretty straightforward lemonade with a bit of ginger mixed in. There's really not burn at all, but there is a ginger flavor hidden under the lemon. It's not crazy impressive, but it's perfect for people who like the taste of ginger, but don't have the tolerance for the burn.

I may not be a beach person, but this drink did help to improve my time spent there.

Fruit 2 Day Morning Triple Berry Sunshine

Fruit 2 Day Morning Triple Berry Sunshine
It's been a long day here at the juicery. Jerry called in sick, so I had to work a double. I told him that milk was two weeks expired, but he wouldn't listen and chugged the carton. Now he's laying in a pile of vom on his bathroom floor and I'm stuck at work. At least the boss just told me that I could leave as soon as I get through this batch for Fruit 2 Day. I wonder what would happen if I only blended the fruit for a quarter of the time that we're supposed to. I'm sure no one will be able to tell the difference, and it would get me out of here like two hours earlier than I expected.

**Cut to six hours later**
Okay, let's see here.
Apples? Check.
Grapes? Check.
Bananas? Check.
Strawberries? Check.
Raspberries? Check.
Blueberries? Check.
Pears? Check.
Cherries? Check.

Looks like I got through all of the fruit that is supposed to get mixed together for this juice. I'll just check the consistency quick and then I'm home free. Fudge. This is really chunky. I mean really, really chunky. Some of the fruit was soft enough and was liquefied, but the strawberries and a few of the others are still in like quarter inch chunks. I already told Sharon that I was going to be home early and dinner is waiting. Ugh. What to do? What to do? I guess I'll taste it and see if it will be acceptable. Well it tastes awesomely fruity. It's definitely way more berry than any of the other fruits that are involved and I for one applaud them for that. The chunks are actually kind of nice. It makes this stand out amongst other juices. It's a bit chalky because of the whey protein, but that's not my fault. You know what this is actually super awesome. I think Fruit 2 Day owes me a thank you for making their product awesome. I'm going to let this slide. Let me fill out the completion slip and Sharon here I come. Oh it actually says on here to only blend it 1/4 of the normal time. Apparently my laziness is the way things were supposed to be. No great reward for me.

Natalie's Hand Crafted Seasonal Blends Blackberry Limeade

Natalie's Hand Crafted Seasonal Blends Blackberry Limeade
This was suggested to me by our Thirsty Dudes ally Andy Czuba. He takes awesome photos and sings in a great band called Strangers. I respect Andy's taste in most things so when he texted me last night and told me to give this drink a try, I knew it must be good.

I've seen this brand a lot at the Lexington Co-op but usually pass them by due to the high price ($2.99 for a 16oz bottle oof!). I already had a good feeling on this when I saw the ingredients: water, limejuice, blackberry puree, sugar. Simple. Clean. Delicious. In a world where most food products have a paragraph of ingredients, it's nice and refreshing finding a drink that has a short list and it's all things that are easily recognizable.

So was Andy right? Indeed he was! The blackberry taste is juicy, thick, and deep. It lingers for a little bit after each sip, which is great. The lime aftertaste is super tart but I like it that way. I really like drinks like this that give you two distinct different tastes right after each other. It's like a one-two punch of sweet berry, and then BAM! sour lime in your face. I might have to splurge on the other flavors of Natalie's delicious drinks.

Cintron Watermelon Strawberry

Cintron Watermelon Strawberry
You know what's not easy? Cutting a watermelon. I don't care if you have an 1100 square foot kitchen with ample counter space, with the amount of liquid and rind in a watermelon, you're better off doing it in a swimming pool because you're going to get both wet and sticky. I was sticky up to my elbows when I was manhandling and trying to chop a watermelon yesterday. It got cut, and looks great, but was no easy task. I was probably doing something wrong.

Strawberries don't grow in my garden. It keeps stretching out and it's almost into my roses, but nothing but leaves are growing and I don't eat strawberry leaves, I eat strawberries.

Due to my recent difficulty with these actual fruits, I thank Cintron for putting them in a can and making the only work I need to do open the can.

Enough about me, let's talk about this drink because it deserves being talked about. Typically with watermelon drinks, they are vile. We, these three Thirsty Dudes, dislike watermelon drinks because they never taste like watermelon and it seems that would be one of the easiest fruits to get juice from. We're men of authenticity, so if you can use actual watermelon juice, wicked. If you can't, you probably have no business making something watermelon flavored. Think about it. This drink does a pretty good job of doing watermelon justice. I would say that it's about 60/40 watermelon to strawberry. It's really sweet and kids would love the stuff but it's also a pretty good summer drink and cold, this is pretty drinkable. There is also no corn syrup sting, which I was actually afraid of.

If you take it as face value, you could be a huge fan of this drink. Don't be worried. Just do it.

Vegas Fuel Energy Drink

Vegas Fuel Energy Drink
Many years ago, Franklin Mercer took a vacation by himself to Las Vegas. His wife Sharon wanted to come along, but he needed a break from her so he told her it was a business trip. So she stayed behind in their home of Zelienople, PA while he went to have fun in Sin City.

The problem is, Franklin Mercer doesn't really know how to interact with other humans well. And he doesn't really know how the world works sometimes. For instance, when he checked into his hotel room, he decided to go down and do some gambling because that's what he heard people do in Vegas. He always liked the way the ball rolled around the roulette wheel on television so that was his first stop. I think he must have seen some spy movie where the villain replaces the ball with one of his own. He couldn't find one of those white marbles so he brought a green bouncy ball. He walked right up to the wheel and in mid spin he put his ball in it.

Obviously, the ball went flying. The game had to be cancelled and since the money was on the table all the players lost their bets (some weird rule this casino had). This in turn made all the players really mad at Franklin so they chased him out. Even though Franklin has been getting chased his whole life, he's not a good runner. He could have really used this Vegas Fuel. He probably would have liked the fruit punch taste it has. He likes sweet things so this would have really made him happy.

Also it would have gave him the energy to avoid being beaten up in the back alley of a casino in Vegas. Oh Franklin Mercer... when will you learn?

Old Orchard Premium Red Tea with Current

Old Orchard Premium Red Tea with Current
When I saw this, I thought to myself, "This is going to suck." Why? It was dark and I thought it was a juice, regardless if it said "tea" or not. Anything in such a large container has to suck. Mass produced, so-called "premium" drinks are typically nothing but sugar water. Was I wrong? Yep-ahhh. I'm man enough to admit it, too. Ladies, did you hear that? A man, man enough to admit he was wrong? Trust me, ladies that are currently totally into me, Jay can attest to the fact that you want nothing to do with me.

This is good. Not too strong at all. A nice, well sweetened tea with the added, strange flavor of current. I don't know how I feel about current, yet. Jay tells me that it's huge in Europe, but here in The States, we're just getting into it. It has a berry taste, but a bitter berry taste. I purchased some current jam for PB&Js that's not too bad, so I'm getting used to the taste, and wanting to get used to the taste.

I don't know where my mom got this, but it's good and if you and like eight of your friends are ever together and want to try something new and you're all thirsty and this is there, get it. Most of you will like it. What a swimming endorsement. "Most out of eight like it!"

Kristall Swedish Raspberry

Kristall Swedish Raspberry
It's no secret that hip-hop artists drink Cristal when they are partying to show off their riches. I may have just completely dated myself there. Is that still a thing, or did it die off in the late 90's? Either way, it's a little known fact that those who are fans of flavor country, but don't drink alcohol down bottles of Kristall in the same situations.

This is my second flavor of this fine product and both have completely blown my socks off. Literally. I had to go across the room, pick them up and put them back on my feet. They are so light and bubbly, but still jam packed with fruit flavor. In my dream world all fruit flavored pop would be like this. It's not syrupy and it actually tastes like raspberries, not sugar or some other sweetener. It also comes in a very classy and classic looking bottle.

Kristall for when you want to party fancy style. Anything else would be uncivilized....or something.

Pom Light Tea Pomegranate Hibiscus Green Tea

Pom Light Tea Pomegranate Hibiscus Green Tea
Things that are awesome include when a solid company like Pom starts to make iced tea. I know it's been around for a while, but every flavor I try is top notch. They start off with a strong green tea flavor and mix in a strong pomegranate flavor. That would be great enough, but then they add some other flavors to up the ante a bit. This one has some hibiscus in it. How are you going to argue with hibiscus? You're not, because you would lose. I have never had a drink that contained this wonder that I didn't enjoy. So here you are with a perfectly blended pomegranate green tea with a hint of floral flavoring. Pom was somehow able to do this and make it a light tea aka diet without losing much flavor. Color me impressed.

Bawls Guarana Exxtra

Bawls Guarana Exxtra
I have never eaten guarana, but I think I would love it. Every drink I've ever had with guarana has been incredible. Take this wonderful bottle of Bawls Guarana Exxtra. It has the standard (but still awesome) bottle with little bumps all over it. I've had the original, and the G33K B33R, but this is my first time drinking the Exxtra. I didn't realize until I was half way through the bottle that it was a diet drink. It's really sweet and has a great guarana taste, but there is no diet taste at all. It tastes lighter than the original flavor of Bawls, but just as good.

Hats off to you Bawls for making the best tasting diet energy drink I've ever had. Good work!

Tweak Tweaker Grape

Tweak Tweaker Grape
Urban Dictionary defines 'tweaker' as:
1. Person who constantly stays up cleaning, washing, organizing, power tooling, sorting or otherwise keeping them-self busy doing menial tasks.
2. Someone who constantly makes slight alterations on (usually a very specific) object, i.e. computer, software, automobile, etc.
3. A compulsive liar, thief, or both.
4. A methamphetamine ("tweak"), or other form of speed, addict (who displays all of the above in an obsessive-compulsive manner).

I could understand wanting to associate your energy drink with the first definition. Keeping busy/being active/etc... is usually an after effect of drinking one. Maybe even #2, though that sort of sounds like borderline OCD.

Three and four though... that's where the lose me. Why someone would want to associate their delicious drink with being a liar, thief, or meth-head is beyond my comprehension. And yes, this is a delicious energy shot. I was surprised due to the name, but it has a really good grape taste and only a slight energy drink aftertaste. Other than the usual energy drink taste, this has a good grape juice flavor. I've only been drinking it for a minute or two but I already feel more energized and ready to get stuff done on this Sunday afternoon.

Rainforest Tropifruit

Rainforest Tropifruit
You may ask yourself may questions when drinking this drink such as, "What is a tropifruit?" and "Is this made from Rainforest?" and the ever popular, "How can you be a carbonated drink and call yourself an anti soft drink?" I'm going to answer these questions three for you right here and now.

What is a tropifruit
Tropifruit is apparently a slew of "tropical fruits" including mango, passion fruit, and guava. The flavor is there of the fruits, but there is something else going on. A bit of an over saturation of...something. Remember in seventh grade when you were in science class and you learned about over saturation by putting salt into a glass of water? Some of it would mix in but as soon as you added too much, it would start to accumulate and coagulate on the bottom or top. I found that happening in this can. I don't know if it was the fruit flavors or the other natural ingredients but I found that there was a bit of "too muchery" in there.

Is this made from a Rainforest?
Hardly. The company actually donates money from each purchase of their product to save the rainforest. That is an ambitious task and should not be overlooked.

How can you be a carbonated drink and call yourself an anti soft drink?
That's a good question. I believe it's because they actually have green tea, ginseng, and or "tried and true" traditional ingredients including a couple new cats like Stevia, which I think was laid on a little thick and gives this drink a very sweet taste. It's all-natural so, as opposed to most other soft drinks, it ranks pretty high in the ingredient department.

I'm on the fence about this one. On one side, the fruit flavor is good, they do well for the environment, and the drink is kind of good for you but on the other side, the sweetener and extra ingredients kind of take away from an otherwise good drink. I'm torn. What do you think?

True Colors Enhanced Energy Beverage Fruit Punch

True Colors Enhanced Energy Beverage Fruit Punch
The other day Punchy was hanging out with that weird "angel" dude that stars in the Red Bull commercials. Punchy just wanted to slug the ol' punching bag for a bit, but the angel guy just kept trying to get him to drink some Red Bull. He kept going on and on about it giving you wings. Being that Punchy is still a child somehow he gives in easily to peer pressure. It didn't take long before he downed a can, then two, then three. He was flying. He had grown accustomed to sugar highs, but this was something completely new to him. He got so worked up that he kept goading the angel to punch him in the stomach. One punch later and Punchy was laying on the ground in a puddle of his own red vomit. Just then a vampire was passing by and thought that it was blood that Punchy was passed out in. Never one to pass up a free meal he pulled out a straw and started to drink it down. It was obviously not blood, but it had a decent taste. The vampire called his friend, who runs True Colors, and they worked out a deal. Long story short they kidnapped Punchy, they keep him tied up in a basement and cyclically force-feed him Red Bull and punch him in a stomach to make him vomit. They then can what comes up, which tastes like a mixture of Hawaiian Punch and Red Bull. I swear it doesn't actually taste like vomit.

Just Chill Tropical Chill

Just Chill Tropical Chill
I've been unpacking into my apartment all week and figuring out what I need to do/buy. I didn't go to bed until after 2:30. At 5am I was still laying there awake thinking about things that needed to get done. Normally I'm out as soon as my head hits the pillow, but occasionally I have nights like these. It was about this time that I remembered that I had some relaxation drinks chilling in the fridge.

I know this wasn't meant to be a sleeping pill in a can, but if it would reduce my stress and help me not worry about a million things, it would be just what I needed. I downed the can (it's weird drinking a carbonated beverage fairly quickly when you're trying to sleep) and lay back down in bed. Within ten minutes I was out. My brain certainly did chill out.

Unfortunately here at Thirsty Dudes our rating isn't totally based on functionality. We're actually more concerned with the way a drink tastes. This is fruity tasting, but in a very light, light way. It's not diet tasting, and it's completely natural, but there's something about it that didn't quite sit right with me. I left a little in the can to taste this morning as I wrote the review. I can say it tastes better when it's no longer carbonated.

One other thing; I absolutely hate it when any company uses the "Papyrus" typeface. It's everywhere and you don't even realize it until it's pointed out. After that you see it everywhere and it's unnerving. There are only two lines of text on the can that use it, but it's enough to annoy me.

Everfresh Peach Watermelon

Everfresh Peach Watermelon
This is a drink for girls. It's pink and has a light taste of peach and watermelon. There is no bite or surprises, just a soft, mellow drink. It's been a long time since I've drunk something like this. It's really flat and kind of plain. Don't get me wrong, the flavors are present, but there's nothing special. It's a blend of two things put together to form one generic pink juice.

Apathetic ladies of the world, found it!

Natrona Bottling Company Jamaica's Finest Ginger Beer

Natrona Bottling Company Jamaica's Finest Ginger Beer
I used to want to go to Jamaica. I think I was young and I actually don't really like Bob Marley. Yeah, yeah, I know. There is more to Jamaica than Bob Marley, but when you're sixteen, there isn't much that you know about foreign countries. If I was sixteen and was transported at the blink of an eye to Jamaica, I would have been lost. I don't know what I would have done. I would have had to get a job at sixteen and blend in. I'm not a tourist, I can tell you that right now. I don't like when people think that I am not from where I am. I often get mad when I think that people don't know that I'm from where I live, like I'm a student at the grocery store, buying Ramen to sustain myself when I actually own a house in the city that I shop in. Maybe that last one was just me, but you know where I'm coming from. I want to blend in. I want people to think that I'm one of them. As a white, sixteen year old is not something that is going to be easy.

First step, find the local watering hole and get a ginger beer. Yeah, that's how I'll do it. I'll start by drinking the hottest ginger beer they've got. I'm from Buffalo where everything is drenched in spicy sauce. I can handle it and that will earn the respect of the natives. I would go to the bartender and say, "I'll take Jamaica's Finest ginger beer, please." and the crowd would go silent awaiting my first sip of the dangerously spicy drink. I would take a sip and you could hear a pin drop while the verdict is being determined. "Very nice." I would say as the crowd exploded with happiness. They would then pick my chair up and carry me around the city because a little dude such as myself conquered such a spicy drink. When interviewed by the local Kingston Bee, I would give the review "It's spicy but sweet. It's got a nice, thorough bite. It is slightly less hot than Goya's ginger beer, but a solid ginger beer and a definite standby." The would print my article on the front page of the paper with an image of me surrounded by bottles of Jamaica's Finest which was donated to me by the Jamacian (Pennsylvania) Government. I am finally one of them. I made it. Success.

Killer Buzz Sugarfree

Killer Buzz Sugarfree
For my snack at work today I brought a half eaten bag of pretzels. It turns out that they were pretty old and stale as can be. Gross sauce. Seeing as I hadn't really eaten all day come 3pm I was starving. There was no food to be found so I downed this to curb my hunger. We've all seen the diet pills episode of Saved by the Bell and know that they are really nothing but caffeine. So I figured caffeine = appetite suppressor. It actually worked, but since my stomach was empty the energy rush made me all crazy. I don't recommend it at all.

When I took the first sip I was shocked by how much I liked the way it tasted. It didn't taste overly diet, but it still had the chemical energy drink flavor that we talk about way to often. With each sip it got worse and worse. About 2/3 through the can it was well along its way to being undrinkable. It's a shame because the normal variety is pretty tasty.

Pure Cool It's Berry Cool! Pomegranate, Cherry, & Cranberry

Pure Cool It's Berry Cool! Pomegranate, Cherry, & Cranberry
Greg makes a good point. He said, "How can you make a product like this. Doesn't anyone taste it before it leaves the company?" I made everyone, and I mean everyone, drink this because it was so bad. How bad? I would describe this as a berry scented urinal cake. Ladies, don't know what a urinal cake smell like? Go to your local bar, and don't bother going into the bathroom because it already smells like a urinal cake. If it doesn't, go into the men's room and take a big whiff. That's pee and urinal cakes [slash] what this drink tastes like. It was co-described as a watered down cough syrup. I concur. It was co-described as medicinal. I concur. I was going to make up this great tale about how I'm "pure cool" but it's not worth it.

Honestly, you have to taste it to believe it, but this is sheer garbage. It is "cool" but I think that it's the cherry in there that's medicinifying, a technical term, this drink. I had ten people try it and there is half a bottle left. No one except me went in for seconds. No double takes. No, "wait, is it really that bad?" Well friends, I will tell you, it was that bad and it still is that bad, in a half full bottle, in the garbage.

Garbage. If you see it, it will inevitably be on sale. Buy it and make one of your dumb friends taste it. You'll laugh when you hear what he has to say about it. It will probably be something along the lines of what I described above.

Snapple 100% Juiced Melon Berry
Everything about this can looks like it was left over from the late 90's. Even though this just various juices with no sugar added it tastes more like a "drink" than a juice. Watermelon juice never works folks. You shouldn't even bother trying. It always ends up tasting like some sort of candy. It just tastes generic and I can't get into it.
