Illy Issimo Cappuccino

Illy Issimo Cappuccino
I am not one of those dudes who wake up and has a coffee before anything nor am I the guy that has a coffee at any point in the day. "Dude, sometimes you just need that jolt." you might say, but you know what I say? No, dude, I don't. If I'm tired, I'm tired. My body is exhausted from doing stuff all day and needs to relax, not take an adrenaline shot to keep going at the pace I was going at. Sometimes I get down and sure, coffee might make sense, but I push through it and get to the end of the day and sleep like a baby.

Ignoring that entire entry paragraph, today I thought it might be a nice change to give it a whirl. Now I'm not going to drink a drink and then sit around like a turd and wait for the effects to kick in. I'm sure it's there, but I don't care and I'm not looking for it. It's all about taste and not function with this guy. If this were supposed to do something, I would let you know. It's a coffee drink. You know what it does.

Taste. It's, once again, just coffee enough that anyone in the range of "kind of likes the taste of coffee" to "loves coffee" will enjoy. There is enough milk and sugar to smooth it out and leave it with its inherent coffee bitterness. This wasn't bad. It's more "adult" than a Starbuck's Frappuccino because it's not as sweet and still tastes like coffee in its base rather than a melted iced coffee drink.

I got this at a steal from a local discount store so you might be able to do the same. Fifty cents doesn't buy you a lot these days but if it buys you a nice, refreshing coffee drink, wicked.

Bai Antioxidant Infusion Tanzania Strawberry

Bai Antioxidant Infusion Tanzania Strawberry
I have been saving this one for a while. Every time I open up my drink drawer in my fridge it's there staring up at me saying, "This is not the time." Today the voice that is proof that I am completely insane did not whisper in my mind. I knew the day had finally come to drink the last of my Bai.

I was expecting this to be the king of all Bai. Strawberry juice is incredible on it's own, and my history with Bai has been nothing if not stellar. After my first sip I knew that Tanzania Strawberry was the ruler of nothing. It's not bad in any way, but it didn't come anywhere near the idea I had of it in my head. The other flavors have been insanely strong tasting just like the fruit that was in the name. I was expecting this to taste like fresh strawberries with sugar lightly sprinkled on top. What I got was more pomegranate than anything. As it turns out there is more pomegranate juice in this than strawberry juice. The strawberry peaks through more in the aftertaste. If this was labeled as a pomegranate juice it would have gotten higher marks. Seeing at they marketed it as strawberry it only gets three bottles due to disappointment.

Upstate Farms Cappuccino Vanilla

Upstate Farms Cappuccino Vanilla
Dudes, this tour has been great. We've been to 26 states and we're on our way home. I can't believe we got up and out of the hotel so early after last night. Dude, you threw a chair out the window of a 28 story hotel into a swimming pool, and that...is neat. Let me stop on to this Arby's and get a jamocha shake.

Oh, crap. Now I've got this shake and I've got to pump gas. I don't know why we would get an RV and not get a driver. Seems dumb. So now I've got to put down my milkshake and pump 80 gallons of gas.

Great, done. I smell like gas, but who cares because I've got this...oh, come on. My milkshake melted. Why didn't you turds move it from the dashboard? I'll still drink it, but if I wanted cappuccino, I would have bought cappuccino. I wanted a milkshake. Drats.

Seriously, if this is gross...it's not bad. It basically tastes like a melted jamocha shake. You guys are lucky that it's still drinkable. If it weren't, I would have quit like I almost did in Nebraska. Why you threw your drumsticks at me still doesn't make sense. So I stole your snare drum and ran around with it. Who cares? Don't get so upset. You took all the strings off my bass before we went on set and then the roadie, who didn't pump the gas because he's thoughtless, brought it on stage and didn't check. Idiot. Next stop, Kansas City!

Honest CocoaNova Mocha Cacao

Honest CocoaNova Mocha Cacao
This has been sitting in my fridge waiting for the perfect moment to drink it. It sounded incredible. The Honest company has a history of making amazing drinks, so when I learned that they made a chocolate line I was very interested. I'm not a huge fan of coffee, but I have enjoyed every Mocha that I've ever tried. You know Mocha, hot chocolate with a little kick. I hardly consider it coffee. It's more of a chocolate drink with a little coffee added.

Since today is supposed to be the so-called rapture, I decided it was now or quite literally never. I guess that's not true. If it were the rapture all of the good Christians would be raised up to heaven while my friends and I had some more time left to suffer on Earth. I would celebrate that suffering with a whole mess of drinks. Seeing as it's all a fairy tale anyways I will drink this mocha cacao in celebration of me being intelligent enough to realize that angels aren't going to come carry people away today.....or ever.

On first smell this has a weird scent. Almost like the chocolate milk that is left in the bowl after you eat some Coco Puffs, but stronger. I took a sip, and this was not what I was expecting at all. It was as if they melted down baking chocolate, watered it down and added two shots of black coffee. First you're hit by the watery baking chocolate taste. It's bitter, but not the good bitter like when you get some quality dark chocolate. As you hold it in your mouth that flavor stays, but as soon as you swallow and take a breath the coffee sets in. I always find it odd when drinks have distinct waves of flavor. In some juices it's nice, but for this it's not working for me. I would have preferred this all blended into one tight flavor.

I really, really wanted to like this, but to be honest I couldn't make it through half of the bottle. I had expected a richer chocolate taste. If you really like coffee maybe it will be something you really enjoy. I'll pass it off to an angel if I see one today.

Illy Issimo Latte Macchiato

Illy Issimo Latte Macchiato
When I was in college, I had a friend called Chad. Chad worked for Student Associates, which basically meant if there was a promo going on from an outside company, he would be on of the people to work it. Handing out products and flyers and just doing promotion was his gig. Kind of like a hired street team, if you are familiar with that term, a term which I feel died out as soon as people started spending time online on Facebook and Twitter and not on the streets where things used to happen.

One of the companies that he did stuff for was Starbucks. They had him handing out cases of their new Frappuccino in the smallest possible containers. Those lil' baby 4oz containers like V8 comes in. 4 ounces? Am I a child? Nay, I am a man who wears child sized clothing.

So Chad took a case of the stuff and gave it to my roommate, Evan, and I and we didn't know where to start, so we decided to just jump head first into the case and destroyed about half that first day, got sick, and struggled to finish the second half.

This Illy Latte Macchiato tastes a lot like that but less sweet and more coffee taste. It's teetering on the edge of my dislike for coffee and my like for coffee tasting things. It's pretty good. There is just the right amount of sugar to offset the otherwise strong coffee taste. I think this is a good product for people like me that don't hate the taste of coffee in things, but don't like coffee itself, all the way up to coffee lovers.

Good job, Illy. You've got a huge market.

Bai 5 Calories Antioxidant Infusions Congo Pear

Bai 5 Calories Antioxidant Infusions Congo Pear
Pears. Pfft. Apple's crappy cousin who always stops by at the worst times and stays way too long and asks you thinks like, "Hey, are you still into that band Bush?". It's not so much insulting as it is a reminder to how dumb you once were and how long it's been since you talked to them. Also, do they still like Bush? Were they asking you because they had something new to inform you about? I don't think Gavin Rossdale has anything new to say about Bush. So pears...

I somehow ended up with this pear drink and I have been reluctant to drink it. Since I'm taking a brief hiatus on pop, I figured today is the day. I cracked it open and liked it. With most of the Bai drinks, it's got the very Stevia undertone with a legit fruit flavor as described. The smell of pear, which never bothered me, is very present when you smell the drink. It's a 50/50 toss up between who wins, sweetness or fruitness. Oh, fruitness isn't a word? I'm sorry, who is reviewing this drink? My cousin? Hey cuz, remember Sponge? That'll get him to shut up for a minute.

This is good, although not the best Bai drink I've had, thus, I will/have rate/rated it as such. If you love pears, you will like this drink, but even though you love pears, you too might be a bit disappointed about the fighting between the flavors. You might want really pear since there aren't a lot of pear drinks out there. I don't know what you want. This might be it. You can't really go wrong with this company, so give it a whirl. You won't be disappointed.

Bai Antioxidant Infusion Jamaica Blueberry

Bai Antioxidant Infusion Jamaica Blueberry
Recently I got to tour a coffee plantation. After trying Bai I was pumped to see (and try) coffee fruit. Unfortunately it wasn't the season for the fruit, so they weren't ripe yet. Of course that didn't stop me from picking what was available from the plants and the ground. Here is what I discovered: A) Not ripe coffee fruit just tastes like your run of the mill plant you would pull out of the ground. B) The dried out fruit on the ground tastes like old wood. Both were gross.

Bai apparently knows the proper time to harvest their coffee fruit because this does not taste anything like a poinsettia or some old Amish furniture. It's sweet, fruity and the stuff dreams are made out of. This really tastes like I mashed up a whole mess of blueberries and filtered out all the seeds and chunks. Do you realize how many blueberries that would take? I bet at least a five-gallon bucket of them would be needed to fill this bottle. Bai means business. Don't forget that. Ever.

Bai 5 Calories Antioxidant Infusions Costa Rica Clementine

Bai 5 Calories Antioxidant Infusions Costa Rica Clementine
Coffee as a fruit? The first thing I (unfortunately) thought of was that monkey poop coffee. Oh, you've never heard of it? Some monkey somewhere eats coffee fruit, poops out the coffee beans, and people go crazy-go-nuts over it. It's the world's most expensive coffee. It comes from a monkey's butt and people clamor over it. Gross. I don't like coffee, or things that come out of butts, but this, luckily for me, is neither. It's pretty fantastic. It's got a sweet Stevia taste, but it really allows the clementine flavor to shine through. It's very fruity and very inviting. It's got a great smell and I could easily drink a straight 40 of this stuff. It goes down really smooth and 16.9 ounces is only 10 calories. This is downright healthy for you and is actually 100% of your daily vitamin C intake.

I hate oranges, but love orange juice. I know it's stupid, but there is just so much work and I've got better things to do than peel an orange all friggin' day.

Bai 5 Calories Antioxidant Infusions Panama Peach

Bai 5 Calories Antioxidant Infusions Panama Peach
Today I spent the day in the studio recording with my band. It was awesome and we had a lot of fun. An added bonus was that we were locked away and we missed the complete annoyance of the St Patrick's Day parade on the streets below. We wrapped up a little while ago and I was walking to my car when I noticed some drunken jerk had completely trashed the side of my car (there was a video camera in the parking lot and the driving was definitely a drunk parade goer). So here I sit, hating drunken idiots even more, waiting for the cops. What better way to pass this time then with a drink review?

Bai is turning out to be a pretty incredible company. They use the fruit of the coffee plant in their drinks for its antioxidant properties. You may expect that to be gross, but it doesn't taste like brewed coffee. It actually tastes like a really fruity tea. This one specifically tastes like tea with butt-loads of fresh peach juice added to it. It's good enough that it's helping me calm down. It is also so good that I didn't even realize that this was the diet version until I was halfway done. Yep, sweetened with erythritol and I didn't even realize. That gives it two thumbs up from me.

Bai Antioxidant Infusion Mango Kauai

Bai Antioxidant Infusion Mango Kauai
Did you know that when coffee is harvested it's a fruit? I certainly had no idea. Apparently it's a fruit and coffee companies discard the skin and the fruit, only keeping the center bean to make the caffeinated drink that billions of people are obsessed with. This may be the most interesting thing that I've learned thus far while being involved with Thirsty Dudes. I personally think coffee is swill. When chocolate is introduced into the mix it's not so bad, but regular coffee is grossville station. This made me very wary of this line of drinks. Coffee and fruit? Ick.

I decided to try this one on for size during dinner tonight. I twisted off the cap and took my customary sniff. Surprisingly it smelled like sweet fruit with no coffee smell to note. For the record I do think that coffee smells incredible, I just can't get down with the taste. I took my first sip and learned some even more interesting facts. The fruit of the coffee plant does not taste a damn thing like what the masses know as coffee. It was as if there was a parade in my mouth. I let the taste linger on my tongue for a bit, so it was a fairly long parade. I'm sure there were people on both sides (getting more and more annoyed by the second) waiting for the parade to end so they could get to their destinations.

The bottle says it's mango flavored, but the label lists both mango and pineapple as ingredients. It really tastes like a perfect blend of those two fruits. My brain wants me to think that the drink is gritty for some reason, but it definitely is not. I think I'm just imagining stray coffee grounds in my juice.

The added bonus of this great tasting drink is that coffee fruit is apparently the ultimate super-fruit. Pomegranate has 65 ORAC units of antioxidants. Acai has 100. Coffee fruit has a shocking 4,000 ORAC units of antioxidants. Any oxidants that were in my body prior to ingesting this have surely been banished to the depths of coffee hell. By coffee hell, I mean some terribly artsy coffee shop where all of the patrons and employees are the most pretentious group of people to ever be assembled. The walls are adorned with terrible art that they think is the deepest thing ever. In their minds they are about to turn the art world on their ear. Really they are just rebelling against their parents, since they still live in their basement, even though they are in their mid forties.

Atkins Advantage Mocha Latte

Atkins Advantage Mocha Latte
First of all, no I am not on a diet. Sometimes, people just have drinks that are common and I haven't had and they are nice enough to let me snap a shot of it and take a sip. All diet jokes aside; this is actually a pretty delicious drink. It smelled familiar and I couldn't place it. Then it hit me like a ton of chocolaty bricks. Cocoa Puffs. It smells like Cocoa Puffs and tastes 80% like Cocoa Puffs. The last 20% is a latte aftertaste that isn't undesirable. It's got a nice creamy head on it once you take the 10 mandatory seconds to shake it. Since it's so thick, the foam lasts a pretty good amount of time and is enjoyable throughout your drinking endeavor.

There is no sugar in this drink either, and the calorie count is 160, a lot less than many other dietary supplements. If you are on a diet, Atkins or not, this would be a good drink to try.

I'm glad I'm done with this review because I am just going to slam the rest of this sample I have.

Pacific Simply Coffee Latte

Pacific Simply Coffee Latte
I seem to be reviewing way more coffee drinks than I expected to. This one's not too bad. It has tons of milk and tons of sugar. Just what the non-coffee drinker ordered. It tastes like coffee flavored toffees. Latte, that means coffee for kids, right? Is it considered a gateway drink to harder coffees? Are there programs at elementary schools to warn against this? They tell horror stories of kids pushing lattes on their classmates on the playground. Then it's them in coffee shops trying mocha on the weekends with their friends. It then cuts to them working in a cubicle downing obscene amounts of black coffee just to make it through the day. A video like that would steer me away from the caffeinated devil.

Nestle Coffee Crisp

Nestle Coffee Crisp
Living on the border of Canada has its advantages. One of them is the awesomeness that is Canadian candy. Seriously, they put the U.S. to shame. When I was in high school/college I knew a ton of people that would take trips up to the Great White North to stock up on confectionery supplies, as well as a lower drinking age and strip clubs. Nowadays there are a ton of convenient stores and gas stations started carrying one of those three.

Even though (for the millionth time) I'm not a big coffee fan, I do enjoy Coffee Crisp. This evening some friends and I went up to Canada to eat at Licks Home Burgers. They seriously have some of the best veggie burgers and onion rings I've ever tasted. We stopped at a corner store to check out the beverage scene up there, and my eyes got pretty huge when I saw this in the cooler. It tastes pretty much like you would expect; chocolate milk with a hint of coffee. It's smooth, but it somehow leaves the impression of the grittiness of the candy bar. Okay it tastes like a liquefied candy bar. Fans of Canadian candy and chocolate milk take note.

Pacific Simply Coffee Vanilla Latte

Pacific Simply Coffee Vanilla Latte
I believe that in high school every group of friends has a restaurant that they hang out in all the time. For a lot of people it's a local diner or a Dennys. For my friends it was a Perkins. We probably spend almost as much time in that restaurant each week as the average person spends at a full time job. We never caused any problems, so the wait staff would let us stay for as long as we wanted. Since we were in high school we had to act like grown ups and intellectuals. What better way to do that then by drinking insane amounts of coffee? Keep in mind that I don't like coffee, but what is a kid to do? Sure I could have ordered a Cherry Coke, but then I would have had to deal with being mocked by my closest friends for the rest of the night. My solution was I would dilute the hell out of my coffee. I would put four creams and eight packets of sugar per mug of steaming coffee. My goal was to just make it taste like sugary milk, with just a hint of coffee flavor. Oh the lengths one will go to in order to avoid a good ribbing from their best friends. This is exactly what the coffee I used to drink would have tasted like if two of the four creamers I used had been vanilla flavored.

Pacific Simply Coffee Mocha

Pacific Simply Coffee Mocha
For someone who hates coffee so much, I sure have been drinking a decent amount of mocha lately. I keep telling myself that it's not coffee and that it's just hot chocolate (or cold hot chocolate) with just a splash of coffee in it. When in reality it's the other way around. Whatever deal with it. It's tastes good. Regular coffee is still gross.
I'm amused that the word "organic" is used five times in the ingredients list for this. This is what you would expect from mocha. It's coffee, chocolate and milk all mixed together. It's a bit creamier than other ones I've had, but I'm perfectly fine with that.
The packaging is nice as well. I've never had a personal sized beverage in a package like this (just some large juices for multiple servings). You're more than likely supposed to pour it into a glass, but I like drinking things out of the container. Who needs extra dishes to wash? Not me. What do I look like I'm rich and have a maid, or one of those newfangled dish washer machines?

Pom Iced Coffee Chocolate

Pom Iced Coffee Chocolate
Fruit mixed with coffee sounds like one of the strangest things ever. It seems like two things that really should just not be mixed. Somehow Pom has done it successfully. They managed to create an extract of the antioxidant properties of pomegranate juice and mix it with coffee in a way that it's barely noticeable.
This really just tastes like nice rich chocolate milk with only the slightest coffee aftertaste. When you really think about it, you can detect a hint of fruit, but I am convinced that if you poured this into a glass and served it to someone they would never notice it.

Nescafe Mocha

Nescafe Mocha
I've expressed my disinterest in coffee beverages, specifically canned coffee beverages, in the past. So why did I buy this? Was it because it's mentioned in an R.E.M. song? You bet your butt that's why. I'm glad I did, because this is way tasty. It's super sweet. It tastes like a nice hot chocolate with a coffee after taste. You know but ignoring the part where the chocolate is hot.
I'd drink one of these on those days when I want a nice chocolaty drink but I need something more sub-sub-sub-substantial.
Now I will stop being a nerd.

Bolthouse Farms Perfectly Protein Mocha Cappuccino

Bolthouse Farms Perfectly Protein Mocha Cappuccino
This was as good as I wanted it to be. It tasted like a Starbucks mocha Frappuccino but with less coffee, which is more desirable to me. This is a large bottle and if I didn't stop myself, I could have easily slammed the entire thing. I liked it a lot and wasn't too worried with the exception that I haven't found a Bolthouse that I like. They're excellent for you but some of them are a bit too much for me. Not complex, just too "let's add this and this and this and this". This was pretty simple and I was pleased to see that it had no additional sugar and was sweetened by the apple juice that is a main ingredient.

I think that this, or any of the other ones, would be great to have any time, but like Jay does, have when you're sick. It's filled with important vitamins and minerals and is sure to make you feel better. They have a straight chocolate one that might be next on my list.

Also, at ~$4 per bottle, it can be a bit steep, but you do get a lot. For those interested in trying it out, they have smaller bottles that are about $2-$3 each which is more approachable. You can also get this at nearly any grocery store.

Bigelow Chai Latte Mocha

Bigelow Chai Latte Mocha
I don't really do chai. I don't do coffee. This should not have been something that I bought. That's what I thought before I tried it. Hey, sometimes when you see things that look interesting, you have to just suck it up and try something new.

Since I don't drink chai, I'm not too familiar with how it is supposed to taste or smell. I can tell you that because of this, I think that it smells a bit like bubble gum. Strange? I know. It's not a turn off. It's just not what one would think when reading the flavors. It might be mocha and light, light coffee together with the milk. Whatever. To me, if there were such thing as mocha bubble gum, this would be the smell.

Now on to the taste portion of this competition. It tastes good. It's creamy and doesn't have too much coffee. It's more of an undertone than a prominent flavor. The mocha covers that up nicely. I don't get a lot of tea, if I get any at all.

This company also makes the same drink in a vanilla, as opposed to the mocha that I'm doing now. I bet it's nice, but for my money if I have to get a spiced tea, I'd stick with Thai tea.
