Thomas Kemper Black Cherry

Thomas Kemper Black Cherry
Two months. Two months left. Oh, two months left in what? Flu season. There are two months left in flu season. It ravaged my boss last week and I think he got it late. Did you get it? Sorry if you did. No, actually I'm not sorry. It's not that I'm heartless; it's just that unless I gave it to you, I kind of have a "hands off" place in your life. I hope that I am "hands on" in your heart, but I hope that I didn't give you the flu.

Speaking of the flu, this smells like cough syrup. It tastes a little like cough syrup, too. It's not bad, but going into it, if you don't expect cough syrup, you will soon be in the clenches of it.

For the first time, I didn't get a honey taste. I miss it, honestly. I liked it a lot in that spiced ginger ale. No, you can't get what you want all the time, but this time I think that it would have been nice. I work hard and deserve honey.

R.W. Knudsen Spritzer Boysenberry

R.W. Knudsen Spritzer Boysenberry
I can't even begin to tell you how refreshing it can be to come across a good carbonated beverage that doesn't have any sugar added to it. We drink a lot of beverages here at Thirsty Dudes, and most of them are full to the brim with sugar. Most of the time it's not a problem, but sometimes it just gets to be too much (I do brush my teeth all the time for fear of them falling out of my head). These are the times I love to visit my friends the unsweetened teas and spritzers such as this.

Fruit is sweet. That is one of the reasons it is so good. You normally don't need to add sugar to it. The R. W. Knudsen family knows all about that. Nothing that I've ever had by them has any sugar added. I may not have been a huge fan of their Sparkling Essence line, but their Spritzer's have been great. This is just sparkling water added to fruit juice. Boysenberries are a hybrid of raspberries and blackberries, and it's definitely shown in it's taste. Mix in a little grape and you have a refreshing drink that I think everyone would enjoy.

If the soda industry took note and followed this process there would be a lot less overweight people in this country. Well if the soda companies also found a way to make American's less lazy too.

OPA! Originals Ouzon Soda

OPA! Originals Ouzon Soda
I had no idea what to expect with this soda prior to opening it. I purposely didn't read anything about the soda or Ouzo before tasting it. Apparently Ouzo is a traditional Greek alcoholic drink, but this is a soda modeled after the taste. It gave off a really interesting smell when I first opened it. It was a pleasant and familiar smell, but I couldn't place it. Then after the first sip it hit me: anise! Could this actually be the anise/licorice flavored soda I've been looking for/dreaming about? I think so!

When I imagined an anise soda, I dreamed it to be like the taste you get in your mouth after your fourth piece of licorice. While this isn't like that, I really like how the taste is. It's really subtle at first, but then as you swallow it, the taste gets more intense and potent. I want to savor every sip because I only have this one bottle and don't know when/where I'll be able to get it again.

Mistic Grape Strawberry

Mistic Grape Strawberry
When I was in fifth grade, all of my free time was spent hanging out with my friends skateboarding. The funny thing about most kids from around here in the late 80's that skated is that only about 20% of the time we were "skating" was actually spent on your board. The majority of it was actually spent sitting on your boards in front of your local mini-mart. We spent way more time scarfing down snacks and talking about skating than we actually did participating. Our local mini-mart of choice was J&D foods. We would skate up there everyday we could and stock up on candy and our favorite Mistic drinks. We probably liked them so much because we were young, dumb and they looked like wine coolers. As everyone knows wine coolers are the pinnacle of coolness. Back then the juice was also carbonated. I can't even comprehend how many of those things I drank before they inevitably disappeared from our world.

The other day I was out riding my bike on an unseasonably warm day and I stopped at a little mart somewhere on the west side. It would have been more fitting if I were out pushing around on my board, which I'll add was my initial plan. Either way I probably looked like a complete idiot when I saw the Mistic. I may have audibly squealed, but we have no way of knowing for sure. When I finally drank it I was a bit disappointed that it wasn't carbonated anymore, but it was still pretty great. Unlike most "juice drinks" you find in mini-marts these days this actually has some juice in it. It tastes mostly like grape juice with a hint of strawberry in it. It really makes me wish it were still warm out so I could call some old friends and sit in front of a random gas station on our boards and talk about how awesome skating was, even though we could be skating at that exact moment.

Gamer Orange

Gamer Orange
When I was opening the box that contained the bottle, I was telling my housemate that this was called Gamer Soda. As he marveled at the logo, he wondered out loud how much caffeine they put in it. To our surprise, this soda is caffeine free. You'd think that a soda marketed towards a subculture that tends to have all night LAN parties. Maybe this will be so delicious that gamers won't miss the caffeine.

As far as orange soda's go, this is pretty good. It's clear, which threw me off a little. But once I got over that and actually took a sip my worries went away. It's almost like an orange cream, but light on the cream taste. Upon further sips, it's actually light on the orange taste too. If you like a mild orange soda, this is definitely for you.

Hosmer Mountain Sarsaparilla Root Beer

Hosmer Mountain Sarsaparilla Root Beer
I want to shake the hand of the person who thought of this drink. I am a big fan of both root beer and sarsaparilla, but I never thought of combining the two. It seems like mixing the two flavors would be like when Ray, Peter, and Egon crossed the streams. It would be a bad idea in theory, but it ends up being a really good thing.

Hosmer Mountain track record with sodas is still staying solid. This is another one that is sweetened with brown sugar and it makes it really rich and delicious.

Everfresh 100% Pineapple Juice

Everfresh 100% Pineapple Juice
I don't care if pineapple juice sometimes reminds me of vomit; I'm still going to keep drinking it. The positives outweigh the pukeatives every time. Pineapples are just too tasty to ignore. It may be the most acid fruit to ever exist. So much in fact that my tongue bled from eating too much. I don't regret it. It was so tasty that I couldn't stay mad.

Everfresh has added just enough water to the juice to minimize the effect of tasting like you just blew chunks. The acidity is low. The flavor is up. If pounding the actual fruit isn't possible, this drink is a decent stand in.

Sparkling Ice Black Raspberry

Sparkling Ice Black Raspberry
I'm going to a friend's wedding this weekend. As a result I felt the need to step up my wardrobe a bit, so I took a trip to the mall. It was a rare case of shopping instead of people watching. It's a strange, strange place to be, believe you me. While going from store to store quickly growing more annoyed by the second, I suddenly noticed a fellow angered shopper drinking one of these. When I passed by the convenient store a few shops down I popped in and picked this up.

Like always I was quick to purchase before realizing it was a diet drink. I was okay with it because it didn't have an overly diet taste to it. The black raspberry taste is pretty strong and it overpowered the sucralose flavor. If I ever went on a diet I would definitely drink these on the regular. My mom drinks zero calorie flavored sparkling waters all of the time. I bet she would love these. I should probably be a good son and pick her up a couple the next time I'm at the mall watching people, drinking iced tea and eating terrible burritos.

PRE Probiotic Enhancer Pomegranate Blueberry

PRE Probiotic Enhancer Pomegranate Blueberry
I didn't mind the PRE powdered drinks at all. It's nice to not have aspartame in my powder. I mean, I could probably drink Kool-Ade all day, and that's sugar, but to know that I'm not rotting my teeth from the back to the front gave me a little sense of mind at the end of the day.

This drink was different than the other ones. It was a bit more watery, a bit less flavorful, a bit more diet tasting. The diet part is strange, though, since it's not a diet drink. It's low calorie, but it's not labeled a "diet" drink per se.

So on to the drink again. It's not bad. If you like a little bit of flavor and a lot a bit of quench and the knowledge you're doing something good for yourself with prebiotics, this is the drink for you. Honestly, this drink isn't not for anyone, but I know that some people who enjoy and prefer a crude blast of flavor might be taken back at the suitableness of this drink.

Think of this drink as the girl who is pretty cute, incredibly smart, and you know when you go to your ten year reunion, she's going to be a doctor. She deserves it because, after all, she worked her butt off in school and you knew she was destined for great things. In my school, her name was Tyra.

Nantucket Nectars Cranberry

Nantucket Nectars Cranberry
There's cranberry juice and there is this cranberry juice. A lot of cranberry juices are too sweet or too tart or too...something. Some of them are so sugary that you can't tell what fruit comprises the juice you're drinking. I understand that the cranberry, or cranius-berrious, is very bitter in its core state and needs some sugar to balance it out. I don't know how someone ate a cranberry and said, "You know Carl? I don't feel bad one iota about dating Karl's ex-wife. They've been broken up for three years and if he can't get over it, that's his problem. Carla and I are in love and there ain't nothing anyone can do about it. Also, do you think that these raw cranberries need sugar? They're very tart and I don't think we can use them for anything."

This is a nice balance and since it's real sugar, you can taste how cranberries were supposed to be tasted, in some of its bitter glory. It's equally delicious whether you're chugging it like some frat dude in a 1980's John Hughes movie, or sipping it like a prep school kid in a 1980's John Hughes movie.

I would like to try to eat a cranberry as-is. I know I could spend something outlandish like $18.99 and get a 2oz. bottle of pure cranberry juice, but what do I look like a guy that has a urinary tract infection? Nope. Clean as a whistle.

Glaceau Vitamin Water Zero Mega-C

Glaceau Vitamin Water Zero Mega-C
I have yet to have a bottle of Vitamin Water I didn't like. They're like a good friend, always awesome and always there when you need them. I normally don't like grape flavored drinks, but coupled with raspberry it's really delicious. The thing I love most about the "Zero" line of Vitamin Water is that it's not as heavy tasting, and doesn't taste like gross fake sugar.

Zuberfizz Grape Soda

Zuberfizz Grape Soda
Remember those dumb little comics in the newspaper that were a picture with the text "Color me happy when..." follow up by some random thought. They were comics for old people. Not interesting to the young at all, but they had their place. Today comic would be slightly different. It would read, "Color me surprised when my grape soda isn't an overly sweet syrupy mess." A light soda was the last thing I expected 1/1000 chance that it will still taste decent. Zuberfizz beat the odds.

Simpson Spring Sarsaparilla

Simpson Spring Sarsaparilla
We've talked among ourselves that it's the middle of the road drinks that we have the hardest time reviewing. If a drink is horrible, it's easy to distinguish what's so bad about it. When a drink is amazing, there are so many thoughts we have about it, that's hard not to write an essay about it. But when a drink is good, but not amazing, that's when it's hard.

There's nothing wrong with this sarsaparilla. It's really smooth and clean tasting (probably because they use spring water), and the flavor is good. It's a very classic flavor, but there's nothing special about it. If someone gave me a bottle of this, I'd be stoked. Although, I don't think I'd seek it out as my #1 drink. Maybe I've become a soda snob?

Ginseng Up Ginger Beer

Ginseng Up Ginger Beer
Ladies and gentleman we are gathered here today to bear witness to the holy union of Ginger and Ginseng. Many of you have known the couple for years and have your personal feelings about them.

Ginger, with her fiery brew, has always been very popular amongst the populace. As a child many a mother would call her over to care for her young when they had a stomachache. She has been an old friend to all of us from our first sips of her ale to our bottles of hearty brew. She is a flavor all her own and we love her for it.

Then there is Ginseng. Many people say he's from the wrong side of the tracks. He very rarely leaves his home and chooses to stew in his own filth. He always seems to be getting himself mixed up in the sketchy drug world. No matter how anyone tries to talk him up, in the end he always emerges as the filthy scumbag that he is.

Now that these two crazy kids are finally being bonded together there is a blend created. Ginger may not live up to her full potential, but she will help Ginseng straighten out his life. Even if that means she ends up tasting a little dirty. Hopefully by the end of the bottle he won't end up dragging her down to the gutter with him.

Cock 'n Bull Ginger Beer

Cock 'n Bull Ginger Beer
I may have found my new favorite ginger beer. While this may not be the spiciest out there, it has a great flavor. The ginger flavor coupled with the carbonation tickles my throat in a great way. This is definitely a sipping ginger beer, but I like that. I'm also a big fan of the bottle art. I don't know what else to really say about this, other than it's really good.

Mary Anna's Berry Sweet Tea

Mary Anna's Berry Sweet Tea
I did not know what to expect with this cat. I read berry and think of some sort of mixed cornucopia of assorted berries. Lo and behold, there is only one lonely berry, little old raspberry. There is raspberry flavor as well as raspberry leaves. I didn't know they had leaves but since I'm neither a professional botanist nor an amateur botanist, it's not really up to me.

This tea had a bold, fruit flavor with a nice natural tea aftertaste. It's different than most other teas and I can't really put my finger on it. It's good though.

Kronik Energy Blue Citrus

Kronik Energy Blue Citrus
One thing I've noticed about energy drinks is they rarely taste good. They definitely do what they're advertised to do: give you energy. Would it be so hard for them to make them taste like anything but battery acid? I can taste the citrus in this can, but it's swooped away by the acidic aftertaste. This may not be the worst tasting energy drink I've ever had, but far from the best.

And now, I'm realizing that it was a bad idea to drink this on an empty stomach.

Numi Rooibos Teasan Honey Lemon

Numi Rooibos Teasan Honey Lemon
This is an iced tea for adults. I might go as far as to say this is an iced tea made specifically for grandmothers. I could never in a million years imagine a child drinking this, let alone enjoying it. Is that a bad thing? Not at all. There are tons of different people out there and everyone likes different things. It's not really my thing, but I'm sure others will love it.

This tastes like a kindly old grandmother brewed a kettle of red tea. She put some slices of lemon in it and lightly sweetened it with agave (okay so maybe this grandmother lives in Portland or Austin, who am I to say?). She then realized that it was the middle of the summer and it was blistering hot out (looks like she lives in Austin). She then poured the kettle into a nice pitcher and put it in the fridge. A couple of hours later she had company over so she poured some glasses and everyone sat out on the porch enjoying the Texas summer (I knew it was Austin!).

Adina Holistics Herbal Elixir Peach Amalaki

Adina Holistics Herbal Elixir Peach Amalaki
God I hate that tribal monkey. I don't know why it bothers me so much, but it just rubs me the wrong way. It's unfortunate because I really like their drinks. I also appreciate the shape of the bottle.

Monkey aside, the tea in this really stands out more than in their other elixirs. It has that unmistakable green tea flavor. It also has a very clear peach aftertaste. I had never heard of amalaki before this, so I did some research. It turns out it's another name for Indian gooseberry, and it has been used to fight a mess of diseases. It's supposed to have a bitter taste, so it works well with the green tea.

I can only hope that monkey design is based off of a real monkey that hangs out in their head offices. I bet they got him to fetch them drinks and do their work for them. Too bad this primate has self-esteem and he's nobody's monkey-slave. I hear he's gunning for vice president next quarter.

Bot Water Grape

Bot Water Grape
Dear Bot,

I would like to take this opportunity to apologize for what I said earlier. Do you recall many years ago when I first had your berry flavored friend and I didn't like it? I was young. I don't know what I was thinking. Do you remember those ten days I had dreadlocks? Do you remember that time that I long-boarded down that hill, fell off my board, and fell head first down and scraped up my hands? Do you remember the time that Connor and I soaked a tennis ball in gas, lit it on fire, and then proceeded to play hockey in the cul-de-sac growing up? I was a very stupid kid. I did a lot of dumb stuff. This is just three of the gallons and gallons of things that I did that weren't so smart. Loving you was one those things.

I know Valentine's Day has come and gone and, once again, I have forgotten about you. I never claimed to be a good companion. I have said, "I love you, Lisa" to a girl called Sarah.

There are a lot of things that I've messed up in my life, and not drinking you for so long has been one of them. After drinking you today, I forgot that you're a borderline juice. You are light, flavorful, and actually quite good. I wish I had you on ice, rather than lukewarm, but all the same, you tasted great and will be a nice addition to my "flavored water" family. You always were just the right amount of sweet and just the right amount of fruit.

So, in closing it's not you, it's me. It always has been, and for that, I'm sorry.
