Sonoma Sparkler Organic Apple

Sonoma Sparkler Organic Apple
I just got back from my second camping trip of the week. I'm exhausted, hungry and filthy. I decided to put stuff away before I took care of my previously mentioned issues. As I was unloading the food and drinks that I brought, but didn't consume, I dropped with bottle of sparkling apple juice on the floor. I was glad that it didn't shatter, but when I picked it up the cap had come loose and juice was spraying out. Drinking this so it wouldn't be wasted took top priority.

I found these beverages at a natural food store in Richmond, VA. They were on sale, so I purchased the whole line. I'm glad I did, because they are superior beverages to most. Sometimes I get a need for soda. I just need it or I feel like I'm going to explode. It's not the flavor, but the bubbles and they way they feel going down my throat. I'm pretty sure I've mentioned this before, but too bad you can read it again. Sure I could stay healthy and just drink seltzer water when I get this itch, but I just can't get down with the weird flavor it has, no matter how often I try. Sonoma Sparkler's may not be as good for you as seltzer water, but it's apple juice that has been carbonated. There are no sweeteners or anything like that added. As a bonus the flavor is great. It obviously tastes like the sparkling apple juice non-drinkers like myself down on new years eve, except it's way better because it's just juice with no sugar, and it's still ultra sweet. Nature, she knew what she was doing when she made fruit. She also knew what she was doing when she made animals hide from me. I spent a bunch of time in the woods and I didn't see a single bear, beaver, bobcat, porcupine or otter. I feel cheated.

Lipton 100% Natural Honey Peach

Lipton 100% Natural Honey Peach
Do peaches need to shave? No other fruit is hairy. That's where my head goes. I've never been to counseling or to see a therapist and honestly, I think I wouldn't care if I had to go. I'd like to be analyzed. Where do these stories come from that we make up? I'm lumping Jay in this with me because we're on the same page with a lot of things. Peach honey tea that normal people would describe as something like, “it tastes good, peachy, and is lacking a bit of the aforementioned honey taste but still tastes like a decent peach tea.” I go the complete opposite direction and decide to talk about how peaches are the hippies, or me, of the fruit world. Anyone care to diagnose me? Where does that hair go when they make tea? If it's 100% natural you would think that little hairs would get in the drink and make it a little strange. I know they're little but there would be so many in there that it would account for something to eventually get stuck in your teeth. Do they run peach teas through the world's smallest holed filter to eliminate those bad boys? After that do they do something with that hair like make shirts or use them for some strange medicinal purpose? "I only use natural remedies and peach fuzz is great for my arthritis."

Yeah. I'm fine. This tea tastes like you think it would and loses in the non-confrontational battle between the Strawberry Dragonfruit. That's a legitimate/bad review right there.

Tropicana 100% Juice Pineapple Orange

Tropicana 100% Juice Pineapple Orange
This juice makes me want to stay in a hotel. Why? Two words: Continental Breakfast. Number one, the Lincoln Continental was a large boat of a car. The Continental Breakfast can range from cruddy doughnuts and a carton of orange juice to a smorgasbord of early morning delicacies including but not limited to:

  • Pastries

  • Bagels

  • Breakfast Sandwiches

  • Cereal

Another thing they have is juice. Sometimes they really raise the bar and have multiple types of juice like orange, pineapple, cranberry, and grape. This drink tastes like you are on a business trip to finally close the Johnson deal and you woke up, thirsty as ever. You go downstairs and they've got a sweet setup but they're running late on juice so you've got to mix. You pull a fifty-fifty with some pineapple and orange knowing it will be good and it is. You can taste the two mingling as if they're shaking hands closing deals with your taste buds. If they can do it, you can, too.

You go to your meeting, promptly impress the client, land the Johnson deal, get a big bonus and the admiration of your co-workers, and go buy yourself a nice new suit because you earned it all thanks to two juices that came together to satisfy your palate.

Favorit Swiss Premium Iced Tea Alpine Herbs

Favorit Swiss Premium Iced Tea Alpine Herbs
Ahh the Swiss and their mountains. They love those darn things. They also love things like Swatch watches, the 80's, skiing competitions, pop music, fluorescent colors, and precision. I would love to meet the person who made this tea because I can almost guarantee that they had a gnarly, white beard. He is a man of the forest. One man scours the trees and bushes for the best ingredients to make this tea. It's all over the place, too, much like the decor in that man's cabin in the woods. Oh, I'm sorry. Did you think that it was going to be a standard issue log cabin? No. He was a mechanical engineer in his early life so everything has switches, dials, chutes, and tubes. If you talk to him, he will outright tell you that a bank closed down and he bought all the vacuum tubes for his house.

Anyhow, he puts these ingredients together into was is a cool, sweet iced tea. It tastes minty because there is peppermint in it but it also has an earthy taste, like woodsy. The same thing that is "bark-like" about, say, a spruce beer, is what gets me about this. This is a carefully made drink that deserves to be sipped and analyzed.

That lovely Swede makes a wonderful tea that, although isn't cheap, deserves to be tries a couple times because it's that good and that different.

Xyience Xenergy Tangerine Twister

Xyience Xenergy Tangerine Twister
Are you a fan of creamsicle flavored drinks, but you're looking for something a bit different? Are you also looking for a diet drink to help work off some of the extra pounds you've been putting on in your older age? Do you need a little extra burst of energy to help you make it through a tired dreary day? If you answered yes to the above questions this drink may be for you. This tastes like someone made a diet orange cream soda, but instead of using normal orange soda they used the tangerine variety. Then they dumped a bit of taurine in it to give it that chemical energy drink flavored that many of us have grown to tolerate if not like. If there was a non-diet version of this I would be more prone to drink it again, but for those of you are have come to enjoy diet beverages this would more than likely be pretty tasty.

Shock Coffee Energy Blend Triple Latte

Shock Coffee Energy Blend Triple Latte
I'm at my parent's house. My girlfriend went to Baltimore, or "Stab City" as Jay likes to call it, for fun and it's just Max and I. We're chilling like brothers. Speaking of brothers, my brother Brian and I were crushing it in Army of Two: The 40th Day and Max decided he didn't want us to play anymore so he shut off the Xbox. Could have done without that but hey, we're going to see monkeys later so I guess what better time than then to shut her down?

I slept on the couch and to help wake up, I drank this. I don't know why. Society tells me that coffee wakes me up but it doesn't. You know what wakes me up? Being up for like fifteen minutes. Irregardless (not a word) I drank it and it was good. Not as good as the mocha but good. Think of a gas station cappuccino that was too hot when you got it so when you got home you put it in the fridge to cool down but then an episode of Monk came on that you hadn't seen before and you forgot about it until it was downright cold. Not as "fresh brewed" as the mocha and obviously not with any chocolate loveliness paired with it.

Now we're going to see monkeys with my mom. It should be fun but what might be more fun is going to Big Lots after. The Thirsty Dudes are pathetic. Seriously.

Fuze Iced Tea Half Tea Half Lemonade

Fuze Iced Tea Half Tea Half Lemonade
With all of these half and halfs popping up lately you would expect the companies to pay more attention to their mixture in order to make their product stand out. Fuze apparently didn't think that was very important. When I drink a beverage such as this I want a strong tea as well as a strong lemonade flavor. All this delivers is a mediocre tea flavor that would fit in well amongst the generic gas station crowd and a lemon flavor that is just slightly stronger than your everyday lemon tea. It's average in every way. At least they didn't put milk in it like they do a lot of their drinks.

Blink Energy Water Zesty Lemon-Lime

Blink Energy Water Zesty Lemon-Lime
I was drawn in by the word "zest." Lured in like a kid to candy in the back of a windowless van. Then, much like the kid, I didn't enjoy what happened afterwards. I think you know what happened after the kid got in the van, right? It had his smelly uncle Carl and his quasi-racist grandmother Gertrude in it and they complained about society and "the Blacks" and took him to their house where they watched Jeopardy on a television with three foot tall rabbit ears with tinfoil on the ends that seemed to do nothing since the picture was still terrible. Myself was just brought into a tasteland of zesty floor cleaner and diet sweetener.

The boy and I were in the same place. That place was a position that we didn't want to be in. If we were together, and let it be known, I have met Carl and that experience is filled with mustard stained, sleeveless Megadeth shirts, and cigarette smoke. His grandma is alright in passing but talk to her long enough and you'll start to feel the "those people" phrase being spat out at you so leisurely that it's doubly offensive.

The little boy wouldn't have been better off with this drink. Sure it would have lasted longer but at least he could go to his room filled with broken sixty's toys with no heads and close the door and be done with it. This drink just keeps punishing me until I finished it. It never got better and just was lemon, lime, and a zesty diet.

Little buddy, it's rough out there. Stick it out. Soon you'll be out of there and your mom can wash the filth, stank, and disappointment from your clothes.

Lo-Gly Low Glycemic Juice Blend Beverage Pomegranate Mojito

Lo-Gly Low Glycemic Juice Blend Beverage Pomegranate Mojito
Even though I'm normally not a huge fan of mint in drinks, when lime is added to the mix it's a whole new ball game. Mojitos of the non-alcoholic variety are delicious and refreshing. Lo-Gly decided to step up the mojito game by adding pomegranate to their concoction. The folks at Lo-Gly are intelligent folks who know what they are doing. If this were just a regular mojito sweetened with stevia it wouldn't be that great, but the pomegranate combats the taste of the stevia and mellows it out. It still has the crispness, but I don't mind it at all. The mint, lime and pomegranate are all equally present and it makes every sip a party. Since it's low in calories, carbs and sugar I can drink as much of this as I want, well as much as the Lo-Gly folks sent me.

Nature's Promise Organic Red Tea With Mango Mandarin

Nature's Promise Organic Red Tea With Mango Mandarin
One good thing about Mother Nature is that she always keeps her word. When she makes a promise you know she'll follow through. Don't listen to what those meteorologists say; they don't have a direct line to Mrs. Nature and are full of lies. I would say that next time you want to go to the beach or on a picnic to give her a call yourself, but her number is unlisted and I don't really feel comfortable giving it out to people. I don't want to annoy her at all.

I was talking to Mother Nature just the other day and she made a promise to me that this tea would be totally organic and totally awesome. Of course that wasn't a lie and this tea is amazing. It's semi-sweet, which is how I've grown to love my tea. You don't feel like you're drinking liquid sugar, but you also aren't just drinking a whole bunch of bitter either. It's made with red tea; a nice change up from the normal black and green varieties. Also, while there is no juice in this bottle the mango and mandarin flavors are there just enough to make this a flavorful tea without taking away from the taste of the tea itself. I could drink this stuff by the gallon, and I would if Mother Nature hadn't told me that it would be a bad idea. As we've learned she doesn't lie and is never wrong, so I'll stick to my 16oz bottle.

Sunkist Naturals Berry Cherry Bountiful

Sunkist Naturals Berry Cherry Bountiful
Some day, and I'm not proud of this, I look back at the last couple days and think to myself, "Holy crap, you idiot. You haven't had fruit in like three days." I'm downright ashamed of myself at times like this. The reflective times. I don't mean to, it's just that I hate bananas and don't like oranges and that's what my girlfriend keeps in the house. Now I know you're saying, "Mike, you can get fruit anywhere. Just buy it." and to that, I will respond with, "I know. Sometimes I just don't." which leads me to realizations like this where I don't eat as much fruit as even myself would like.

Remember when I was on that cruise and all I ate was fruit? What a happy life that was. Now, in my regular life, I eat hamburgers and tacos and ice cream. What a garbage diet. Now I came across this little guy and may be able to turn that all around. Cherries: like 'em. Raspberries: like 'em. Strawberries: Like 'em. Another secret gem to those who buy this is that there are blackberries. Another secret, which should be obvious, is that this is pretty good. You can taste all the fruits, which is great. There isn't any "grit" in there but it's still thicker than a juice, which is to be expected with anything that dares call itself a "smoothie." If you call yourself anything you'd better live up to it. Otherwise you're no better than ol' fruitless Mike.

Northern Neck Pale Dry Ginger Ale

Northern Neck Pale Dry Ginger Ale
Those of you who know me may know of my affinity for the state of Virginia. Since 2001 my bands have played there fairly regularly, and I've developed quite a few friendships. In 2003 when a band broke up in Richmond I simply stayed behind. I spent three months or so between Warrenton and Richmond and it was wonderful. To this day I still try to make it down to Richmond to visit at least once a year. It's one of two cities that I would ever leave Buffalo to live in (Toronto is the other).

With so much love for the state how have I never tried Northern Neck until today? The can claims that it has been a Virginia tradition since 1926. Apparently my friends are not ones for tradition. This may be the single best ginger ale I have ever had, even though it's sweetened with HFCS. Due to the sweetener and the fact that it is owned by the Coca-Cola company I expected this to be just another generic ginger ale. Sometimes being wrong feels so right. To sum up the flavor I would say that it tastes like a ginger beer without the burn. I love the burn, but I know a lot of other people do not, and sometimes I just want the flavor. Now I have a soda that will appeal to those with weak taste buds and those not looking for an adventure at the moment. Most modern day ginger ales do not even taste like real ginger, let alone have any in them. This has ginger in it and you can taste the difference. It's so damn flavorful that I'm kicking myself that I only bought one can on my most recent visit to the capital of the Confederacy. Next time I will not make the same mistake.

Apple & Eve Fruitables Tropical Orange

Apple & Eve Fruitables Tropical Orange
From personal experience I can say that most kids like fruit. Fruit is fun and it's sweet most of the time. I can also say that most kids do not like vegetables. Vegetables aren't as fun. They are the things that your mom makes you eat. I mean they are green a lot of the time, what fun is green? The sad truth is that vegetables are generally better for you than fruit. See, you're mom's not really being a jerk; she just wants you to be healthy.

Apple & Eve decided to help take the strain off of parents and make a juice that mixes the awesomeness of fruit with the health of vegetables. Each bottle of their Fruitables line contains two combined servings of fruits and vegetables. I do advise parents to pour this in a glass for their kids. If they do I doubt they would ever catch on that they were drinking vegetables. The carrots on the label may be a turn off for some kids though aka my sister who even at the age of 30 refuses to eat them for no good reason.

This is a sweet drink, even though there is no sugar added. That's the pesky sugar that comes naturally in fruit. It does have that slight vegetable flavor that all fruit and vegetable juice mixtures have. It does not bad taste at all, but it's noticeable so it's notable. It's called Tropical Orange, but it mostly tastes like a light tropical fruit punch with some vegetable undertones.

Good job team. Kids will get their vegetable servings, and they will think it's a treat. You've created every parents dream.

Burger King Frappe Mocha

Burger King Frappe Mocha
Dear King,
I understand the role of a king and I wonder what you are the king of. No one is the king of burgers. That is just a nickname. You have been "the king" for a while but I am wondering what your jurisdiction is. You spend a lot of time modeling for toys and being creepy around town but I often wonder what you do. I am not second-guessing your king-hood, but I just would kind of like your resume.

While we are talking about the things you've done, you've done a good job with your Whopper line. I had an "Angry Whopper" and it was spicy and still retained that quintessential Whopper attitude. I also had the Carolina Whopper and it was good but it was very saucy. Very saucy, like some sort of old woman freshly divorced and ready to paint the town red. Very saucy.

While you're kinging it up, you should know that although I appreciate you looking out for the kids, your servants are kind of messing things up. Kids nowadays are a bit chubby and you made the sweeping declaration of making things healthier. For that, I appreciate it. You are a wonderful, healthy king, but your servants have served my young son french fries instead of apples. I didn't know until I was home and can't give him a serving, even if it is small, to him. He's too young.

Now on to what you've been waiting for: compliments. Your Frappe line is wonderful. It's pretty great and it was actually easy to look at. It looked like one from an advertisement. The consistency was almost like a looser milkshake and it was perfect. It was very mocha and chocolate and just a little bit of coffee. I don't have any improvements for it. A little whipped cream on top and some chocolate sauce as a lovely decor.

The king, although I don't know your role in this world aside from your spokespersoning for a burger franchise, you're alright in my book. Keep creating Whoppers and keep coming up with new menu items and make sure to give my little buddy apples from here on out. He likes fries too much to eat them.

Uve Gourmet Weight Loss Sparkling Apple Pomegranate

Uve Gourmet Weight Loss Sparkling Apple Pomegranate
We have the facts and the answer is that a lot of America is tired of being overweight and unhealthy. Gym attendance is higher than ever and so is the purchase of low calorie foods. I for one am all for it. I'm not saying that the skinnier you are the better you are, but everyone out there please take care of yourself. I don't want anyone out there starving themselves or purging. I just mean take little steps and put a little effort into things. When you do a little exercise and eat better you feel way better about yourself, and more importantly you feel better physically.

Uve is a company who takes low calorie foods a step further with ingredients such as WellTrim*iG, which they claim helps reduce body fat, promotes thermogenesis, supports healthy cardiovascular function, and helps to promote a healthy response to inflammation. The FDA hasn't verified these claims yet, but let's give these folks the benefit of the doubt. The soda also has a bunch of other ingredients to help with the metabolism of fats. These folks are taking the “diet” drink seriously.

When I first opened the bottle the smell was absolutely incredible. It was like someone smashed a bunch of apples and pomegranates and shoved my snout right in it. The taste didn't quite live up to the fragrance though. It starts off as a mild pomegranate and quickly changes to apple, and even quicker it then tastes like apples that had been soaking in stevia overnight. There's another flavor floating around there as well that I can only assume is the WellTrim*iG. It's a weird diet-esque taste that doesn't taste like any zero calorie sweetener I've ever tried.

As I said the drink doesn't taste as good as it smells, but would you really expect it to? It's a diet drink, and when you venture into that realm you know what to expect. The thing is that even though I have complaints with the flavor, they are fewer than I had anticipated. This is a superior beverage to almost any other low calorie or diet soda I've ever tried. They went diet, and somehow managed to make it taste remotely decent. Can you say the same?

Cripple Creek Brewing Myers Avenue Red Root Beer

Cripple Creek Brewing Myers Avenue Red Root Beer
I used to be in a band. I've mentioned it before and I'll mention it again. I don't give a rip. One day, we as a band dug out my drummer Josh Myers' (see where I'm going here?) basement. "Dug out?" you say? Yes. He lived in an old house in the outskirts of the suburbs and had a section of the basement that had a dirt floor. He dad needed some help so we dug down about a foot or two in about a 150 to 200 square foot space. That's a lot of dirt.

We dug and dug and filled up wheelbarrows and dumped it in an unused well outside. I don't remember how we got it up the stairs, or if there were stairs, or if we made a ramp but all I know is that I took my shirt off because it didn't matter where else dirt got because we were covered. All of us. We did a great job and I can't imagine the amount of money that we saved Josh's daddy. We all felt accomplished and were thanked by a fantastic pizza; the food of movers and grunt workers.

Back then there was no Thirsty Dudes so back then we were all idiots drinking no-name cola but now...now I know better. If I could do it again, I would bring a cold six-pack of this stuff. Nothing is manlier than root beer and four dudes digging dirt like some sort of criminal or misbehaving dog or human backhoe deserves great stuff. This root beer is strong and contains a special ingredient that changes the entire way that this drink tastes. Cinnamon. I've wanted a nice root beer with cinnamon for a while. I don't know why, but I have and this drink doesn't let me down.

Now I can't go back in time to quench the thirst of us, but I can meet up with some of the guys and give them a bottle and have them mentally go back and reminisce about "the old days" and how much better it would have been with this root beer. Good time, good tunes, and good root beer: the equation for a good time.

Kern's Nectar Guava

Kern's Nectar Guava
You know how when bees make honey it can taste a little like the flowers they got the pollen from? Well I'd like to get some honey from bees that were feasting on guava blooms. I got the idea from the hummingbird on this can. Yeah that's right, I went from hummingbird to bees in less than a second. My brain works in mysterious ways. But yeah, guava honey would probably rate right up there with rainbows, puppies and your kiss as the best things in life (the producer made them cut it down to just your kiss).

Unfortunately this Kern's guava nectar is not on that list. It's good, but the HFCS makes it a bit too sweet and a bit too thick, in an unnatural way. It just masks the glorious taste of the guava a bit too much. Oh well I'll take what I can get when it comes to this fruit. Now someone send me that honey.

Green Fit Tropical Citrus

Green Fit Tropical Citrus
There are tens of thousands of drinks available throughout the world to drink for pleasure. We drink them everyday and most of the time and think nothing of it. Then there is the class of drinks that you drink for function. They are the drinks that you more than likely would never drink unless it was for a specific purpose. Energy drinks fall under this category, as do health shakes and protein drinks. They are formatted to serve a specific purpose, and because of that the taste generally suffers. Green Fit has created a drink that combines six different functional beverages into one; protein, energy, fiber, antioxidants, electrolytes and green superfoods. One would think that by combining six different types of drinks (who generally aren't all that tasty on their own) that the result would be total swill. While it's not my favorite thing in the world, and I wouldn't grab one for enjoyment, they were able to make a very palatable, very functional drink.

The drink has a citrus taste that masks most of the grossness that the ingredients would normally bring on. We're talking about whey protein, guarana extract, flax oil, spirulina extract, chlorella extract, fenugreek extract, and konjac. That's some pretty gross tasting stuff on it's own. The drink also isn't as thick as you would expect it to be. It has the consistency that falls somewhere between Vitamin Water and 100% juice. They also use stevia to sweeten it, and mask the flavor so it has that coolness to it. If they had added a little more orange juice, and ditched the stevia, this could be down right nice, but even though they didn't it is still passable and one of the better tasting functional beverages that I have tried.

Blink Energy Water Perfect Peach

Blink Energy Water Perfect Peach
When I first heard about this drink I assumed it was unsweetened water with a hint of flavor and caffeine in it. As it turns out it is sweetened and is more of a Vitamin Water than your average everyday water, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. The problem comes from the fact that it doesn't exactly taste like Vitamin Water, but instead falls in between the two beverages. The peach taste is fairly fake tasting, which may be the actual flavoring, or it may be the caffeine that was added. About a year ago we got a bottle of caffeine you could add to any drink to make it into an energy drink. It gave every drink you added it to a very distinct taste, and that same taste is in this bottle. Actually the more I drink of this the more it tastes like water with caffeine added to it, which is what it is in essence. If the peach flavor had been a little different to mask the taste of the caffeine this thing would be pretty decent, but as it is I didn't even finish the entire bottle. Sorry Blink.

V8 V-Fusion Sparkling Tangerine Raspberry

V8 V-Fusion Sparkling Tangerine Raspberry
If you think that all of the research that the United States government is of the nuclear genre then you my friend are a damn fool. Truth be told only 3% of the money the government ponies up is actually spent on working to harness the power created by nuclear fusion. The other 97% is given to the V8 company in order to create superior beverages. You see the United States realized that the original V8 was absolutely disgusting, but that was because tomato juice is revolting by nature. In order to help it's citizens the government started giving the company money to make a line of beverages that rated from decent to great.

With their latest grant the V8 company decided to experiment with adding some bubbles to their juices. They did a fine job of it. They took normal seltzer water and mixed in a healthy amount of fruit and vegetables. They did it in a ratio that the drinks taste more like fruit juice, and the vegetable flavor is at a minimum if it is there at all. The problem with it is that they tend to have a general fruit flavor and not like the specific fruits the flavors are names after. A can of tangerine raspberry is quite delicious, but it doesn't taste specifically like those flavors. The addition of the apple, grape and orange juice is to blame. It really does taste more like an apple orange drink than tangerine raspberry. I like it, but I would really enjoy more clarity in the flavor.

Also, they added some stevia extract to the mix. I don't believe it was meant as a sweetener. I think they added it to enhance the natural flavors, as more and more companies seem to be doing. I've said it before and I'll say it again; stop it. The juice has enough flavor on it's own and it doesn't need stevia added to it mucking up the works.
