Mike loves new drinks. He's drank some gross stuff in his day, and this blog is making him drink even more against his will. That being said, he wouldn't trade it in for the world. He loves new beverages and is always, and always will be, on a quest for something new.

Fentimans Ginger Beer

Fentimans Ginger Beer
Let me be the first to say that I'm sorry Fentiman's. We are straightedge dudes and we do not partake in anything alcoholic. When we saw "0.5%" alcohol, we just chalked you up as a company we would never be able to partake in. Then, when we recently found out that Sprite or 7Up has more alcohol content in it, we decided that we couldn't avoid you any more. So, we're sorry and we can't wait to tear into some quad-packs of your delicious pop.
REVIEW!

Good. I liked it. I know Jay will like it. It's got capsicum in it which is the key to a good ginger beer, in my opinion. The Goya Ginger Beer had it in it and scored them a 5 out of 5. This is a wonderfully burning drink that I can see buying and rebuying again. I was thrilled what my friend Robbie brought it over. It had a nice burn and we all agreed. It left you with a subtle "hotness" and a nice sweetness. I easily could have drunk another one if I didn't have any self control for my body or teeth.

I know Fentiman's is becoming more and more available throughout this area and if we have it, you shouldn't have any problem finding it. We had it at our major grocery store but you might be able to find it at your local beer merchant if they know what's good for them.

PRE Powder Sybiotic Drink Mix Pomegranate Yumberry

PRE Powder Sybiotic Drink Mix Pomegranate Yumberry
We don't do a lot of powdered drinks. It's hard to keep a consistent flavor between batches or mixes. We have a few teas that we just haven't done because it's near impossible to get similar mixes. With this, though, it's pretty easy. First, I will say that I have one 16-ounce container and one packet of this mix. I shook it up and called it a day. Hopefully we can all meet on the same page with that.

So on to the review. I read the instructions and was psyched to see that the number one ingredient was cane sugar but then further down the list was Stevia. It is called a "synbiotic drink" and has prebiotics in it that are cultures of bacteria that clean you up from the inside out. In addition, it has probiotics and synbiotics, which are all used to build up immunity. All of Pre's drinks are like this. Thanks for thinking of my health, guys. They've got a bunch of different flavors, too. This was my first flavor and I thought it a safe place to start.

The pomegranate and yumberry is a common mix and we have some on the site, but the cane sugar couldn't beat the uber-sweet Stevia mix. It's not undrinkable, but it is not without the cold and sweet artificial sweetener taste. It's got a pretty good fruity flavor, though. It's a good change from those other powdered drink mixed.

I think that Pre is a new company so show them some love and pick some of this up.

Pacific Simply Tea Tangerine

Pacific Simply Tea Tangerine
Hmm. Sometimes you drink something and it makes you think. I feel that Pacific has one vat of tea that they make and mix in with all of their drinks, and why shouldn't they? Why would they make multiple vats of the same drink to use in different drinks? Part of going back to the same company is that you like something that they do. The green tea used for Pacific drinks is very bitter and very long lasting. If you like that, hey, you're welcome I found them for you. If you like a quick bite and then a prompt release, you probably won't be crazy. Look, these drinks are good and they don't mess around with flavors and additives and stuff. Little bit of sugar, lotta bit of green tea, moderate bit of flavor. It's tea first, after all. Why should they add something to it? Oh, so that they can sell more product? Good idea and smart thinking, marketing department.

This tea tastes like a bitter tea with the rind/zest of a tangerine. It's made from real orange juice concentrate and natural tangerine flavor, but they use it in a "gourmet" sense and not a "BAM with flavor" sense. Do I punish them for it? No. They are clearly trying to target people with more sophisticated taste buds. I do have this, but maybe I've drunk too many Pacific drinks this week and my palate has become bored.

I'll give it some time and come back for more later.

Hey Song Shaking Jelly Soda Drink Orange

Hey Song Shaking Jelly Soda Drink Orange
This is just as I suspected. Good. I think the fellas and ladies over at Hey Song knew a good thing when they saw it because this is the same type of thing as the apple I had last week. Jay did the grape flavor and felt the same love that I did. So we, the Thirsty Dudes, are all on the same page.

This is the same jelly/Jell-O texture as before, but this time with a sharp, sweet sparking orange juice. Now that I've mastered destroying the can to enjoy this drink, it's simple to share this drink with others. All you need is a pair of pliers and some elbow grease.

Also, as a bonus, I've filmed the first ever video review over at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_sr_P5hW9M so make sure to check it out. It's our first one so be gentle. I did it at work with no one knowing which is why people walked in on us. As you can see, we made him try it. He liked it. You should, too.

Limca Lime

Limca Lime
On voyage to the Indian market I came across this lil' dude. I must have missed it last time. It's called Limca and, you guessed it, it tastes like lime pop. It's pretty self explanatory, but in a good way. It's made from Coca-Cola as a subsidiary, but between the retro glass bottle and the vintage screen-printed label, you would never guess. You would think that you just stumbled upon some old bottle of pop from the 70's.

Taste? It's more like a candied real lime. It's not like a candy lime flavor. Get it? It tastes more like a real lime than some chemically manufactured lime flavor syrup. I don't know what it's actually made with, but I give it all the credit for not being neon green like most lime related products.

Also, for those health nuts out there, this has half the calories as a can of pop. I read it twice to ensure that I was getting my information correct.

I liked it and if anyone likes the taste of lime water, they might want to try this. It leaves a lime water aftertaste that keeps you wanting more.

Pacific Simply Tea Wild Berry

Pacific Simply Tea Wild Berry
Not too shabby. It's pretty close to if you were to make iced green tea and then (somehow) flavor it with natural flavors. Maybe juice wild berries and pour the juice in your tea. Sweeten it a little bit and you are done. Enjoy your wild fruits.

It was pretty bitter and left a bit of it behind which was fine with me since I wanted to go back anyhow.

I like flavored waters. I saw this and immediately bought it. I anticipated a night, light flavor but I was promptly let down. I am unfamiliar with the taste of agave but between this and the "natural organic pomegranate blueberry flavor" it tasted...fake.

Hey Song Shaking Jelly Soda Drink Apple

Hey Song Shaking Jelly Soda Drink Apple
Oh my gosh...look I drink stuff every day. Some good. Some bad. Some strange. Some normal. This drink is so awesome and strange and involved I can't wait to tell you about it.

Individual snack packs of Jello (or equivalent) would be the base of this drink. The base, people. Jello. Base. The base is Jello. Take a bottle of sparkling apple juice and marinate the Jello. Take the mixture and put it in a can and you've got this drink.

I didn't know what to expect so I just gave it to my friend Matt because he saw the can and wanted to try it. He opened it up, smelled it, and then took a...slurp. It totally took him by surprise. He said that there were giant chunks in it and I looked inside and he couldn't have been more right. I brought it over to my friend Mike and tried to pour it into a cup for him and couldn't because the chunks were so big. I eventually resorted to taking a pair of pliers to the can and opening it enough to get it out of the can in its entirety. Now I have a cup of just amber colored sludge and I love it.

The taste is a bit like an energy drink, but it is probably just the strong apple taste making it seem like that. It's a good think that these are cheap, like $1, because everyone is getting a can for Christmas. This drink is fun and this is yet another reason why I love doing Thirsty Dudes.

Young Energy Source Barley Tea Drink

Young Energy Source Barley Tea Drink
I don't know what was wrong with just calling it "Barley Tea". I don't know why they had to append "Drink" to the end of it. The only ingredients are mineral water, fructose, and sugar. Barley is probably in there somewhere, but there really isn't anything that would turn it into a "Tea Drink" instead of just a "Tea".

ANYHOW...

I bought this in the largest size possible, over 60oz, because I wanted it to taste like the Uni Barley Black Tea but it didn't and now I have to deal with 60+ ounces of regret.

That's a bit strong. It's not bad, it's just not what I wanted it to be. I wanted that smooth taste that I got with the other one. It heavily barley flavored and not so "chocolaty" like I described the Uni drink.

If you like the taste of barley, get a giant bottle. It's a very good, true flavor. I just wanted something different. I wonder if Uni makes a 60+oz bottle. I deserve it. I'm wonderful.

Cici Jelly Juice Strawberry

Cici Jelly Juice Strawberry
Woah jelly. Get it? Like "Woah Nelly," the debut album from Nelly Furtado. Get it? Hilarious. I'm hilarious. I also write all my own jokes. Ladies, seriously, I'm a gem.

This is a strange drink. Do I need to say that? It comes in a bag like a Capri Sun except with a pre-installed straw. Nice of Cici to do so. Thanks, Cici. This drink has nata de coco but it is more like an aloe vera than, say a
Mogu Mogu drink. It's also way less "stingy" than that but, in exchange, way more potent. Almost like a strawberry perfume. Something girls would wear in 4th grade to attract boys, even though 4th grades should spend more time on long division and less time on perfume and boys.

Alas, this is not a great drink. I'm no yuppie, but I find this drink uncivilized. Kids though? Kids would/should/do (probably) love this stuff. You can too for the ultra low price of around 70 cents. They have a lot of different flavors, too, and multipacks with a couple in it. This of them like juice-boxes, in bags, with chunks, built in straws, and less good.

Foco Aloe Vera Drink with Honey

Foco Aloe Vera Drink with Honey
This is my least favorite aloe vera drink. Can you have a least favorite? Wouldn't your least favorite just be bad? Couldn't you just say you didn't like it or just not describe it as a favorite? Allow me to revise...

This was the worst aloe vera drink I've ever had. It's harsh, I know, and Foco has done me right with some of their nectars and stuff but this is just plain not great. It's got a strange odor to it. Someone I worked with described it as "...like Play Doh®" and because I can't think of a better description, I have no choice but to agree. The honey taste is very good, though. Not enough to save it, but a good, natural tasting honey. It reminds me of these honey hard candies I used to get from The Nature Company that had real honey on the inside. Those candies were the only things I ever bought in that store. Did you know that when The Nature Company did inventory, they had people count all of the tumbled rocks in a giant barrel? My mom had to count small rocks for a night and she probably still has nightmares.

Get that candy. Don't get this drink.

Deep Watermelon

Deep Watermelon
America. Why don't you embrace the flavors of melons: honeydew, cantaloupe, watermelon, and so on? They're good guys. Why would you leave them out of your lineups? Did they do something wrong? It's not like we, Americans, don't buy these fruits. So why would you assume that we don't want the same fruits in juice form? India knows what their people want and created this little guy.

That being said, it was kind of a poor execution. It tastes like someone got a hold of those Monin flavor concentrates and just put it in a glass of water. It tastes very syrupy, even though it's real sugar. Even still, there was like 26% juice, which was actually surprising. It did taste like watermelon in small sips, but in big sips it got quite gross fast.

If you're feeling melon-y, get one of these. They come in a three pack and might be $1.50 at your local Indian grocer. It's worth that, but not a penny more.

Hank's Root Beer

Hank's Root Beer
I don't know what makes a gourmet root beer "gourmet". Is it that they add extra "stuff" to the mix and, in return, can call it "gourmet"? That's all they do with pizza. Maybe they put better ingredients in and get to call it that. Aside from whatever quillaia and yucca extracts, this root beer is pretty standard when it comes to ingredients. There is a pretty definite vanilla taste to round out the root beer taste, which is actually pretty nice.

I also found that I burped a lot with this drink. Good, heavy root beer burps. The kind of burps that you get yelled at by your mom when you burp in your room with you door closed and she's downstairs. You know burping is "rude," but come on mom it's my room. If I can't burp there, where can I burp? That's what I want to know and now!

This root beer is good, and I appreciate the recommendation. We appreciate the recommendation. It's not terribly different from a lot of other root beers, but it's not bad by any means and you can tell that it's not a mass produced, garbage root beer.

Noyu Honey Lemon Chamomile Green Tea

Noyu Honey Lemon Chamomile Green Tea
You've spent your entire life running around. Doing errands for yourself and doing errands for other people. Getting placed on time. Anticipating getting places late and speeding to get there on time. Climbing mountains. Running marathons. Having kids. Doing eating challenges. Skiing. Taking out the garbage. Riding a bike long distances. Washing windows. Shoveling. Weeding. Filing your taxes. Housekeeping. Discussing the plot to a M. Night Shamalan movie. Attending Church. Telling your significant other that their pants don't make their butt look big. Visiting your in-laws. Discussing politics. Jumping rope. Researching a solution to the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. Walking uphill both ways in the snow. Preparing for the 2012 Apocalypse. Finding a parking spot. Waiting on hold.

CALM DOWN!! Honey = soothing. Lemon = soothing(?). Chamomile = calming. This is good, too. All flavors are represented and for a little over one dollar, I am down with this. If they sold this (they may) in one of those really large containers, like 60 ounces, I wouldn't hesitate to get it. I am actually impressed at how adequately they captured all the flavor friends in this drink. Surprise yourself. Find this drink (I got mine at a local Marshall's) and take your time drinking it.

Adina Holistics Herbal Elixir Grapefruit Goji

Adina Holistics Herbal Elixir Grapefruit Goji
I'm not the biggest fan of grapefruit. Why? I don't know. I just don't like it too much. This was not too much like grapefruit, though. It was more light, an ultra-light lemonade. It's not terribly sweet, but has a nice, lemonade tang/zip to it. It doesn't linger too long, which is nice because it's more refreshing that way.

If you love lemonade and want something a little (emphasis on "a little") different, give this a try. You won't be disappointed.

Pacific Simply Mate Yerba Mate

Pacific Simply Mate Yerba Mate
This might be my first yerba mate and I don't know what to think. I'm unaccustomed to the flavor and don't really know how to describe it. For those who haven't had it, I'll do my best as a virgin myself. Let's start off by stating that this is straight yerba mate without any additional fruits or whatever, just a little sugar and citric acid. It tastes like a bitter green tea, but smaller. Does smaller make sense? Green tea has a bold, present bitterness. This has a smaller taste and a smaller bitterness. I don't know if I'd say "less" because it just seems less present. It has a light citrus taste, but that could be because of the citric acid. It's very lightly sweetened and one kid said that he doesn't like unsweetened tea when he drank it. After a couple sips, you can tell that there is a tiny bit of sugar in it.

I don't like it too much, but I'm not going to penalize Pacific for that. That's on me and me alone. One person that likes and knows yerba mate said that it was good and he'd drink it again.

I know that it might be hard to take this review as helpful, but it's a new taste. If you like a nice, bitter green tea and are looking for something different, give this a try. It could be your new thing.

Santa Cruz Organic Concord Grape

Santa Cruz Organic Concord Grape
At first, it tasted like your standard non-alcoholic, sparkling grape juice that you would use to ring in the new year. In addition, it didn't taste like concord grapes. Just like grape flavoring. Then it happened...

It started to taste like concord grape and started developing it's own taste. A crisp, fruity, sweet taste that tasted like that of a concord grape. Not as concord as the Aloevine Grape drink, which doesn't make sense, as there are actual concord grapes in this drink.

Nonetheless, this was good. Now, at any time you can celebrate the smaller things like:
  • Your dog not going to the bathroom in the house for a week.
  • Getting a raise.
  • Christmas.
  • Getting a new hat.
  • Passing a hard test.
  • Not dying.
Versatile and delicious. Like Parker Louis, this drink can't lose.

China Mist Organic Green Tea Lotus Pear

China Mist Organic Green Tea Lotus Pear
I don't like pears. Pears to me are just crappy apples. They're too hard, the taste is weak, and they look like apples and sometimes surprise me in things like fruit salad and regular salad.

That being said, I like this drink. I don't know what the taste of a lotus is, but I can tell you that this does taste vaguely of pears, but it's not bad. It gives you a nice, ultra-low, sweet/fruit taste, not unlike a real garbage pear. I personally like the taste it leaves you with. It's like a sweetish/tartish/bitterness taste. I would take a sip, swallow, and leave that strange lingering taste for a good thirty seconds to a minute before I would take another sip. It might be from the green tea, but it's a different bitterness that I'm not really used to and is hard to place.

All in all, it was a good drink. I didn't buy it so if it was up to me, I wouldn't have bought it because of my undying hatred for pears, but since it was in my possession, I'm happy that I took this nice voyage.

Big Ben's Root Beer

Big Ben's Root Beer
Root beer comes in two different varieties; good root beer and great root beer. Even the "worst" root beer is still acceptable. Since we've been doing this site, we've come across some really surprising and different varieties like some made with vanilla, cinnamon, clove, and licorice. What does it all mean? Drinking Mugg or Barq's just isn't the same as it used to be.

Although the Big Ben's birch beer was surprisingly good, this root beer is...less than. It's not bad, as I mentioned above, it's just a bit too standard and safe.

Maaza Lychee

Maaza Lychee
Smell? Eh, not too desirable. Taste? Eh, not too desira...wait...good. Let's try that again. Smell? Weird. It's really not good. Downright bad. The initial taste is also not that good. The tail end and aftertaste are good though, which is why you keep coming back for another sip, all the while, enduring 50% bad for the 50% good.

It's hard to get a hold of because it's all over the place. You know the payoff will be worth it, but at what cost? It almost doesn't want you to come back because it's so uninviting.
